I would go with Matt Gray and either JC or CE as player assistant. Matt has been part of the coaching staff for 6 months and he was bought to the club by Paul D and for me it has a feeling of the brilliant Liverpool boot room of the 70’s, 80’s. Shankly to Paisley to Fagan and so on (Dalglish). JC & CE are the leaders player wise in the dressing room and again looking to the future I think it would be great to get them involved in the coaching part too. Where have all the player/managers gone (I used to love seeing that). The big difference there is that someone being here less that 6 months doesn't really equate to the Liverpool boot room does it. Paisley was assistant to Shankley for 15 years. Fagin was on the backroom staff for 25 years before getting the managers job. You can't compare that to a coach who has been here for 6 months. If McKimm was still with us then I'd say the comparison is closer, but as it stands it's as close as rugby is to cricket.

ANDY K:
Fair point, however, from what I have seen Matt has the respect of the current players and he has got to know them since Christmas.
He would bring a form of continuity which I think is important after one manager of 11 years.
Hopefully we can keep the core of the team: JB, JC, CE, TW and for them to know the manager (Matt Gray) would be advantageous than starting anew with a new boss.
BTW: Your Rugby/Cricket analogy is not so far flung, a game played and watched by the prawn sandwich brigade.

BTW: Your Rugby/Cricket analogy is not so far flung, a game played and watched by the prawn sandwich brigade. I see where you are coming from and a decent argument there. But do we not have that with Mickey Stephens too? And remember that the players you mention (and others that you've not who I think are just as important) have played under other managers too. Just having "the continuity" isn't a strong enough reason for me to promote someone when they could potentially still be on board anyway. Much more important is that they can do the job, and as us Sutton fans remember from the whole Ian Hazel years, being a coach and being a manager requires very different skill sets. Dos himself said he wasn't a coach, but brought people in to do that with great success (pretty much the only duff choice there was Beadle, but the others were great). I think what we need is a manager, not a coach wanting to be one. And I don't think we should take that risk again seeing how it ended up last time. And even more so when we are getting applications in too, according to the website. If the board go with MG after fully assessing the capabilities of all the other potential candidates then that's their choice, but someone who gets promoted upwards because it's the easy choice or out of loyalty doesn't automatically make them the right choice, especially if they have no experience above assistant manager level. Last time out we appointed someone who had no connections to the club, and lets face it, it didn't turn out too badly did it? We really can't afford to get this one wrong.

Sammy Moore & Jack Midson would be a very good choice for me too.
I think they have been doing a fine job over the last couple of seasons.
Leatherhead and Concord Rangers.

One thing we could all try to do next season is to not, instantly, get on the new manager's case everytime some little thing goes askew, in a 'what Dos would have done' manner. Because, unless we get off to an absolute flyer, we could waste a lot of time here speculating on the unobtainable and the past. I think the maximum expectation at this level is survival in this league. No cup runs. Just survival. If we get the right person for the job then that expectation will be me and possibly exceeded. I agree but as I've said elsewhere there is a certain section of "Support" who really are never satisfied.

Didn’t expect that at all. His appointment as assistant came about as our form nosedived. Purely coincidental I’m sure but it’s not an appointment to get pulses racing. Sure he’ll prove himself the best man for the job though, good luck, we’re all behind you.

I would say welcome to the new manager but seeing as he was already here I will say Congratulations to Matt on the promotion 🥳
It keeps the continuity and he knows the squad so will know who needs to go and who he needs to bring in to improve it.
It is a bit harsh to say the dip in form coincided with his arrival as he can't help the injuries we had and actually in a lot of games we still looked decent but just really didn't look like scoring. Let's hope he knows the number of a good striker or two.
From the interviews he has already done he comes across well, seems knowledgeable and just as honest in his assessment of things as Dos was.
It goes without saying I wish him all the best and hope his first managerial role is a roaring success.

Here's hoping those League Two scouting and management credentials will aid us in our development as a club, and hopefully take us to the next level...
