The second part of our home double-header in the first week of the season is against newly promoted Chorley (slight older supporters might remember our games against them in the late 80s). With Bromley and AFC Fylde both failing to score against tomorrow’s opponents this is going to be a tight game with goals likely to be at a premium.
Having collected 4 points from the opening two games I feel we’ve started well under Matt Gray, for tomorrow though I’d love us to give it a real go and start with two up front.

I wouldn't read too much into Chorley's first two results, though the goalless draw at Fylde suggests that they set up very defensively. I too would like us to start with two up front. I imagine that one or two lessons have been learnt from the first half against Barnet.

So the last time we played Chorley at GGL was in the 89/90 season - a whopping great 30 seasons ago! I think we won 3-0 and Chorley were relegated after 2 seasons in the division.
Just as an aside, the teams in this division now who were in it in that season were : Barnet, Yeovil, Us, Chorley and Barrow. 3 sides now play in the league (Cheltenham, Macclesfield and Wycombe) whilst the rest all either play at a lower level, or in some cases don't exist/reformed.

Judging by the weather forecast for tomorrow I think that the first goal is going to be scored by a goalie, JB to do the honours?

Better be careful what you wish for and specify it should be in the Chorley goal... I'm assuming you mean high winds are forecast!

(slightly older supporters might remember our games against them in the late 80s). And really old supporters won't remember them at all.

For the second game in a row we came from behind to earn a point at home, but this time it was a two-goal deficit that had to be made up.
We did switch to 4-4-2 for this one, Kenny Davis the midfielder to drop out and Omar Bugiel starting up front alongside Aaron Jarvis.
Chorley are a less sophisticated side than our two previous opponents, but soon showed that they know how to score from set pieces. With the unseasonably strong wind at their backs in the first half, they won a corner in the seventh minute and giant centre back Meppen-Walters rose unchallenged at the far post to head his team's first goal of the campaign. Three minutes later another corner was headed against the bar by the same player, team-mate Chris Holroyd first to the loose ball to make it 2-0.
Jarvis quickly pulled a goal back for us from a tightish angle and we then started to turn the screw, but it wasn't until early in the second half that we got the equaliser, a fine free kick from Rob Milsom. It was end-to-end after that, and we finished with Dundo and Dylan up top. David Ajiboye, a late sub for Tom Bolarinwa, produced some trickery on the right to send in two decent crosses but neither found a free Sutton player.
Barnet's evening win at Meadow Lane puts them third and shunts us down to eighth, but we do remain unbeaten. To keep that run going on Tuesday we'd need to improve on our recent form at Eastleigh.

Very disappointing two goals to concede so early, certainly with poor defending for the first. From then on we were chasing the game but having got the two goals back it seemed a formality to go on and win. However Chorley had other ideas and we seemed to run out of ideas. Certainly didn't create sufficient chances until the last 5 mins and we need to improve on that to win at Eastleigh.

I’m rather confident we can get something on Tuesday.

A rather blustery day at GGL and at times reminiscent of the trip to Daventry some years back, especially when their 'keeper saw his sliced clearance catch in the wind and fly out for a corner in the second half.
Not sure who won the toss but Chorley had the conditions in their favour in the first half and scored with two identical balls to the back post from well delivered corners.
U's settled though and Aaron J reduced the arears with a powerful low strike that went through the 'keeper and after that there was only on team controlling the play as the team played the ball around nicely but couldn't find a second.
Second half U's did get that equaliser from a superbly taken free-kick by MotM, Rob Milsom. U's continued to find good progress down the right through eother Tom B, Dale B or later David A but the final ball really failed to test a defence well-marshalled by Chorley's two centre-backs who both had fine matches.
Four minutes after U's leveller, Chorley brought on Massanka and they finally had someone who could carry the ball and threaten and thereafter, U's task became just that little more difficult and a late rally was not enough to find a winner. I think 2-2 was about fair with both sides having to contend with difficult conditions but U's played the better football, particulalry against the wind in the first half.
Difficult to guage how well Chorley will go this season in the conditions but they worked hard and defended well and that's not a bad basis to start.
After two decent refereeing perfomances, yesterday's saw that level drop, not significantly but noticeably. He made some poor decisions in the first half and seemed to have it in for Omar B from the off. However, perhaps in hindsight his decision not to book their fella for hauling down Dale B in the first half, saved Ben G in the second because I thought there was a case for his challenge on the lively Massanka being a red and had he given the first half yellow it may well have been. I also would like to see the challenge for the free-kick that Rob M so expertly converted again as I was not totally convinced it was a foul. Perhaps we got the rub of the green.
I would have taken four points from the first three so five is not a bad return.
On to Eastleigh where our only win was when Dos was in the home dug out. Time to change that poor run although I would take a point.

Won't be any easy games in this division, will be a fight for every point! 3 games in and we have 10% of our 50 point target.
Thought Chrorley were hard working and well organised, as expected. Some positives to take from the game such as fighting back from two down, some good defending and a well taken goal from Jarvis, but unfortunately plenty of negatives too...
Disappointed to concede a carbon copy second goal, thought our tactics were poor and was a real shame we didnt kick on and win the game from 2-2, in fact Chorley looked most threatening despite not creating any real chances. Their sub striker caused us a lot of problems.
I'm not sure why Matt g waited so long to make changes, it seemed obvious that David A was going to cause some problems for tired Chrorley legs and that change should have been made earlier. IMO Randall was running down blind alleys and making poor decisions all day (couldn't fault his effort) and we should have put David A on sooner, perhaps as part of a 3 up top rather than sticking with a rather rigid 4-4-2. We were generally careless with the ball all day but obviously conditions were far from easy. Butler did well with his kicking.

Can we look forward to 10 years or more of reaching the "target" and finishing in no man's land in this division ? Let's hope so.
