Hard to know where to start when summarising last night's horror show. Billericay managed to do what no National League side has achieved this season or last, and that's put five goals past our keeper. It was a very open game, with both sides also being denied by the goalframe, and might easily have finished 7-4. With JC and Jon Barden back in the starting XI we might have expected a tight defensive display from Sutton. But that's not how it turned out.
It all started so well, with Harry's superb downward header from Rob Milsom's free kick giving us an early lead. But we then gave away a free kick just outside our area, didn't deal well with it, and Robinson equalised with a shot off the top of a post. That goal reinvigorated the home side, who went in 3-1 up at the break. Their third and fourth, which took the game beyond our reach, were inspired strikes from distance, the sort of efforts our players couldn't muster.
David Ajiboye had struggled to make an impact in the first half on a heavy pitch, and Will Randall did pep up our attack when on for him in the second. Tommy pulled one back shortly after hitting a post, but 'Ricay continued to threaten at the other end. Their fifth (Robinson completing a hat-trick), in the final moments of the seven minutes of stoppage time, was the result of us pushing almost everyone forward (with JC as a makeshift centre forward) in a desperate but fruitless quest for two more goals.
I'm not sure what the financial implications are of this early Cup exit, but we do at least get half the replay gate receipts from a 1,000+ crowd. It may be that we can't now afford to replace Dale Bennett. If so, the injury to Craig Eastmond last night creates another headache.

Hold on a minute. Ebbsfleet just beat Woking away and have been bringing in some loan players. Don't expect them to be an easy touch ! So why haven't we brought in any Del? Question for Matt obviously, If you were present at the meet-the-manager night back in July this topic was covered when someone asked Matt if he was open to bringing in players on loan. He provided an answer of loan players generally benefiting the parent club rather than the loaned club.

He provided an answer of loan players generally benefiting the parent club rather than the loaned club. To be fair he also said he was going to play 2 up front every home game and didn't! Actually going back to the match, even in this drubbing (which it was) I thought there were a couple of bright sparks. Randall coming on for the 2nd half for example. He's looking a decent player and keeping him fit could be a major factor. I thought Reid was not bad either in places, and you really can't knock Harry's passion. To be crying at the end of the game when you've put your heart and soul into the match tells you all you need to know about the man. And for the first 15 mins we comfortably looked the better side. But full credit to Billericay. They were the better side by far over the 90mins (whether they were or we made them look that way is a matter for discussion) and even after going 3-1 up they were still going for it which provided a pretty open game - a neutral would have enjoyed that. No complaints about the result. Billericay fully deserve their place in the next round.

He provided an answer of loan players generally benefiting the parent club rather than the loaned club. That was three months ago and we currently have no recognised right back. I also happen to think it's bollocks, especially considering our budgetary restraints. It's also quite possible Matt simply doesn't have the contacts to get anyone decent in on loan, in which case we could be in quite deep doodoo, but I hope this isnt the case.

In my humble opinion a lot of the new bandwagon jumping ,glory hunting type supporters that Sutton United seem to have acquired are not good enough !
You can't win leagues, gain promotions and play the likes of Leeds United and Arsenal every season.Get behind the Manager and the team.

One option might be to give Matt some support like a Mentor for a few weeks. The management team should be working together but I do not know if they have any influence. We seem incapable of changing our tactics mid game. Slightly tongue in cheek here but Alan Pardew is local and currently out of work I believe. What about John Still?

Like a director of football role? Not the worst idea, but only if Matt is open to it and it doesn’t drain the budget.

Hi Halftimet, I doubt very much, in my opinion, that John Still would be available, he's "Head of Football" at Maidstone, he wouldn't have time to help both clubs would he ?

I understand the paying-off the contract being a drain. Maybe retain him as a coach but get someone in to manage the team such as Micky Stephens.

The goals whilst some were fine strikes some were nothing short of a disgrace on our part. We seem to have an issue with wide free kicks, why on earth is our player wrongside from before the ball was struck. He's allowed the attacker to make first contact from the initial cross which is a no no. That's defending 101...
The second is down to zero communication, zero awareness. Our defense is deep yet the central midfield are 20 yards away and their man's peeled off the front. I've noticed this from previous highlights our defense drops deep and the midfield is too far away, we aren't compact enough in transitions.
I could go on but that's not the Sutton of the last few years we look a shell of our former glories. The players have to burden some of the blame because that's not tactics that's basics. We used to have Downer, Collins, Beckwith, Bailey, Lafayette, Amankwaah. Real experienced leaders who would sort things out in the changing room. We seem to be lacking leaders massively..
Having watched football for decades, working in the game for over one I've seen a lot of sides succeed and a lot fail and I'm sorry to say very, very rarely does it turn around when results like this start happening. I think defeat Saturday and Matt should walk away but being a new manager pride will likely see him stay until forced.
If he were to go in the interim I'd look at Marvin coming from the academy alongside Micky and Jamie as a trio whilst the club looks to find a replacement. Marvin obviously would continue to do the academy stuff as priority but just be good to have that trio imo.

Thanks Andy K (corrected) for posting the video. Only for the 4th goal were Sutton unlucky, because Butler loses his footing in the mud and might otherwise have got to the shot.
For the others - compare their shooting with the shot for Sutton's second goal which hits the post before Tommy nets the rebound. Billericay either shot with power, or lofted the ball over the keeper. Sutton's shooting this season often lacks power and is aimed to beat the keeper by position, clipping in off the foot of the post as per this example. It seems to me we have got rid of all players who could shoot hard with the ball on the ground and beat the keeper [e.g. Cadogan Lafayette Ayunga], or chip him, and what we have left are players trying to roll the ball into the bottom corners.
