There should be a strong squad for this match. Good to know Wayne Brown will play a part in the game.

Crossley Lema to Leatherhead for first team football. I thought that was the point of his loan and the point of having an academy.

No recognised right back and we just let a young prospect who plays in that position go. Don't blame the kid, if Gray wouldnt even bring him back into the squad under those circumstances then I'd have done the same. Grays going to set this club back ten years if he doesn't give youth at least half a chance. Not only will we be a conf south side but all our prospects will have left

I think it was really Matt Gray that shot JR.

Erm isn't that what he's doing. How are old are Goodliffe and Adjiboye for instance? There are others too

There's a difference between promising players who come through our academy and young players who've already established themselves in one of the top three steps of the pyramid.
I thought Crossley Lema looked a good prospect on the rare occasions I saw him play, but there's now a huge gulf between academy football and the National League, and very few if any Sutton players will make that transition. It may be harsh, but the best our academy lads can hope for is probably some County Cup action, an occasional emergency place on the first-team bench, and then signing for a Step 2 or 3 club.
Of course, if we get relegated then they may have more of a chance.

Obviously the circumstances make it hard for Lema to feature but I would've thought staying on loan would've kept everyone happy. Maybe there's more to it then meets the eye.
It's vital for the academy that the young lads see a pathway into the first team and not just Surrey Senior Cup games. I agree with the post above many times the young lads simply aren't ready for the step but the odd place on the bench, little run outs here and there can really boost the others plus make Marvin and the staffs life a lot easier.
It's a tough one given our current predicament but I do hope to see Pearce back soon as he looked a real solid young player last season.

How many young players did Dos give a chance to? I dont think he set us back 10 years!

Are we surprised about Crossley? In the latter part of last season when we had yet another injury crisis he played 1 full game (on the last day at Dover). He featured a number of times on the bench but was never used. Seems like the club would rather play a player out of their preferred position than use someone like Crossley.
To be honest I didn't see enough of him to say whether he was decent enough for this level or not. It wouldn't surprise me if the same thing happens to Jude Mason.

How many young players did Dos give a chance to? I dont think he set us back 10 years! Dos and co's investment into Marvins youth set up was just starting to pay dividends with Mason, lema and Pearce threatening to break into the first team. Gray has sent a strong message that those players won't get a chance, even if there is no one specialist available in that position. Dos felt that those players were good enough to grace our bench and occasionally the starting 11, Gray has firmly closed that door. It may indeed be that he's correct and they aren't good enough but sometimes youth can surprise you and often learn very quick. Answer me this, with the benefit of hindsight could we have done any worse with lema since Bennet got injured and could lema have been more of a liability at right back than bola against dagenham? I doubt it somehow.

Going back to my first point it must cost us money to run an academy. If a player is good enough to sign first team forms and we send him out on loan to get experience i'm very surprised that a few months in that we release him.
Maybe more to it than meets the eye but if it continues to happen with others then we have to question whether we are running an academy for the benefit of the other local teams.

Hasn't that always been the case, or certainly for the last 20 or so years. Players that have gone from our youth system/academy to playing for us on a regular basis we must be able to count on one hand (actually that's a good thread for the forum - players that graduated from the youth setup who made a significant career at Sutton). The thing is that this is always the case, yet it is an issue now because we're not doing very well. Never an issue before though?

I thought he looked ready for at least a short run in the first XI, seeing as we don’t have a right back. He’s big and strong, quick and isn’t too bad on the ball. What have we got to lose? We can only drop one more place in the bloody league anyway.
