Going back to my first point it must cost us money to run an academy. My understanding is that the club actually receives money to run the academy, in partnership with VL UK, to provide both football coaching and classroom-based learning. I'm not familiar with the funding model, but I think the money comes from central government.

Going back to my first point it must cost us money to run an academy. If a player is good enough to sign first team forms and we send him out on loan to get experience i'm very surprised that a few months in that we release him. Maybe more to it than meets the eye but if it continues to happen with others then we have to question whether we are running an academy for the benefit of the other local teams. Hasn't that always been the case, or certainly for the last 20 or so years. Players that have gone from our youth system/academy to playing for us on a regular basis we must be able to count on one hand (actually that's a good thread for the forum - players that graduated from the youth setup who made a significant career at Sutton). The thing is that this is always the case, yet it is an issue now because we're not doing very well. Never an issue before though? Moving on from our youth set up and reserves is a bit different to moving on from an academy where we spend monies on producing players. In this context its irrelevant to me whether we are doing badly or well. Its more of a question of using our resources effectively.

Rumour had it that Tranmere would have had to scrap their academy if they hadn't got promotion that season because of the cost.

We’d be doing very well to get 1 or 2 academy boys every 5 years who go on to have decent first team careers. The only time a significant group came through together in my memory was Bailey, Gray, Honey, Nurse (he may have just been few ressie games) when Phil Dunne was in charge of the youth team. And the first team were at a lower level then.
Asking for academy players to do anything but a fill in job at the moment will not solve any problems, unless we happen to luck out with a late developing young scoring sensation!!
There are many many academy players in PL and Championship clubs who I doubt will end up playing as high as National League and they hoover up the best talent in youth football.

There's a difference between promising players who come through our academy and young players who've already established themselves in one of the top three steps of the pyramid. I thought Crossley Lema looked a good prospect on the rare occasions I saw him play, but there's now a huge gulf between academy football and the National League. How do you know? Chelsea seem to be doing quite well at a much higher level with Academy players. It's worth taking a chance.

The point here is that if a right back academy prospect is not even deemed worthy of a place on the bench when the squad has no right back, then that is sending a strong message to all our young players that the door to the first team is firmly closed. Just when it seemed last season that the investment in our academy was starting to pay off.
No one is saying any of our prospects are destined for professional or even top non league football but to not give them a sniff seems to me very regressive and I'm not happy to see it.
But all the best to gray and his master plan. I'm sure playing players out of position and entirely ignoring not only the breakthrough academy players but the loan market will continue to reap dividends

There is a huge gap between academy football and National league and that is why these players are out on loan at Isthmian league level to see if there is any chance that they may be able to make a breakthrough.
Once again my point was that as its only early November is this too soon to assess if a player will be able to bridge the gap.Of course there may be other reasons why our player signs for another team but putting a statement out that the player wants first team football doesn't seem to make sense as he is already getting that out on loan !

Crossley Lema to Leatherhead for first team football. I thought that was the point of his loan and the point of having an academy. Quite surprised by this, I genuinely thought he was going to make it here - was impressed with Cross during the pre-season schedule, like others have said though the step up to playing in the National is significant. I wish him well at Leatherhead. Onto tonight’s game - delighted to hear that midfielder Wayne Brown will feature - I really rate this guy. Matt says he will field a strong squad but I’m hoping some of the academy will feature - lad Nunes has scored for fun this season - I wonder if we could see him. I note that Horley no longer play in the Combined Counties - instead the Southern Combination League.

As AA says above there is a big gap between the academy youngsters and VNL. As much as anything it is size and weight. I last saw our academy squad last season playing Chertsey, and I wondered then how many of them could step up since that CCL team had their measure. At any club academy the brutal truth is a maximum of 10% could makes it through to the first team, the others will lack the mental or physical attributes - not the ball skills. Still it is also true that nothing is better than having to step up to raise a young player's competence and confidence - so tonight it will be interesting to see the academy players get a chance.
