The point here is that if a right back academy prospect is not even deemed worthy of a place on the bench when the squad has no right back, then that is sending a strong message to all our young players that the door to the first team is firmly closed. Just when it seemed last season that the investment in our academy was starting to pay off. No one is saying any of our prospects are destined for professional or even top non league football but to not give them a sniff seems to me very regressive and I'm not happy to see it. But all the best to gray and his master plan. I'm sure playing players out of position and entirely ignoring not only the breakthrough academy players but the loan market will continue to reap dividends Can't agree with this. You think based on the fact Matt has deemed that 1 particular player from the academy shouldn't be brought in ahead of experienced and good players at National League level he is sending a strong message that the door is firmly closed? That is a stretch to say the least. Dos did exactly the same over and over again and shifted midfielders to full back on many occasions. This is no different to how it has always been. Yes, it's great getting a good youngster coming through but they will continue to be few and far between. The club haven't even closed the door on the lad and have said they'll monitor progress - you may think that is just posturing but they could have easily just left it out of the statement.

Man of the match Tommy Wright should have scored 5!

Finished 3-0 (Brown, Jarvis, Wright). Nice for Wayne to get a goal on his return from that long injury lay-off. Tommy struck the goalframe three times! The academy players did well (three started, three came on as second-half subs for first-teamers), with Kiyo Brown catching the eye on the right wing.
It may be only the SSC, but good to get that first win since 21 September and a first clean sheet since 5 October.

Numerous options with which to view tonight’s welcome result , you choose which one suits !
Option 1 : Relegation fight , what relegation fight ?
Option 2 : At least we are still in with a shout of silver ware this season !
Option 3 : This bodes well for when we are back in the Isthmian League !
Option 4 : we are still in with a shout of promotion if we carry this form forward !
Option 5 : At least tonight we don’t have to listen to MG telling us how well we played , their goal was an unlucky deflection and how the opposition manager thought we were the best side in the league despite the result !
For the record I choose option five .

You couldn't have chosen number 5 as Horley didnt score.
Bit harsh that, yes OK Sutton are in a relegation battle but they won tonight. Maybe in a Mickey Mouse cup but a win is a win.

A bit harsh I agree but so has been our season so far . As for option five I still stand by that because at least we don’t have to listen to MG stating the usual because Horley did not score .

That was better! Horley did not pose much of an attacking threat but they had some defenders who looked experienced. Sutton kept the ball moving faster than Horley could re-position their back four, and that created the openings. Maybe I counted one from another player but I thought Tommy brought some of Matt's VNL luck with him. In addition to scoring one, he hit the crossbar twice (1 lob 1 shot) and both posts. Wayne Brown had a good return.
For the first time this season home fans saw our GK pluck a corner delivery off the heads of attackers - catching it with both hands. In front of Dudzinski the two debutant centre halves looked a competent pairing, though not severely tested. Another rarity was the sight of a Sutton forward shooting hard, low and on target (Jarvis).
Star turn amongst the academy lads, as AA remarked above, was Kiyo Brown. Though playing as a right winger he looks left-footed and can probably play either side. He was quick, elusive, passed the ball well and always available to receive a pass. He forced two good saves from their keeper too. It was a display that should earn him a place on the 1st team bench.
