Malcolm Allison changed the nickname of Crystal Palace FC from 'Glaziers' to 'Eagles' sometime in the 1970s.
Is it time Sutton United had a 'jazz-up' on our nickname?
'Us' sounds like the bend in a toilet, and is a term many other clubs use. The nickname 'Gambians' is difficult for others to understand (and I've never heard this shouted in action anyway).

A stupid idea that warrants no further comment!

Why is this a stupid idea?
Sometimes a name makes a difference in PR.

Would not say the idea is without merit, from a cold hearted commercial point of view there is a good point!
But just fyi 'The Gambians' is a bit of a joke and proves you should not believe everything on wikki - however Gambian Army was used a couple of times I can think of.

'Giraffes' sounds interesting - and very likely unique.

My first Sutton game was against Poole Town in the FA cup. I knew nothing about the players or Non League football (still don't ) . The chap in front of me kept shouting out encouragement to one particular player. I could find no mention of this player in the programme but he still kept shouting "come on Hughes". Took a while before I twigged. I've never liked the nickname but I would be very wary of change. The next stage would be a sponsor friendly name (like Total Network Solutions) and of course the boring old Borough Sports ground would need a new title (A plant stadium? Falcon Builders Park?).

I always liked Accrington's catchy Interlink City Express Stadium myself.

I think its been tried and the council would,nt let the club change the name or something? If you see it I reckon you can probably have your name on it for a few quid, fancy a floodlight ;D

Despite being a conservative (small "c") traditionalist by nature - for example, I hate the loss of chocolate from our colours and abominate the use of an away strip when there's no colour clash - I've never liked the nickname and I get fed up seeing headlines about us in the NLP which turn out to be about Cambridge Utd.
I quite like Gambians. It celebrates a relationship of which we should be justly proud.
