TBH, he has followed the letter of the law. FIFA's version states:
A player is guilty of violent conduct if he uses excessive force or brutality against an opponent when not challenging for the ball.
Violent conduct may occur either on the field of play or outside its boundaries, whether the ball is in play or not.
He is also guilty of violent conduct if he uses excessive force or brutality against a team-mate, spectator, match official or any other person
Grabbing the bloke round the neck could be seen as excessive force. As already said, I think the ref could have used a bit of common, got rid of the streaker and had a quiet word with the player. But like a lot of officials these days, common sense isn't on the agenda.....

I would argue that the player did not use excessive force but only that needed to stop a person who could have endangered anyone on the pitch?
I am getting a little fed up with games being ruined by officials, yes there are rules but in truth if we had to follow all to the letter we would never get matches played. I have seen Forbes get sent off, this stupid decision at Havant and tonight Van Persie, its just getting ridiculous.
Failure to excessive commonsense by officials should in itself be seen as breaking rule 1, page 1, all 3 of the above decisions were blatantly wrong and outside the norm. All the Stones players on Saturday should been cautioned and Brian Clough should have gone to prison for clipping a marauding fan around the ear, and every player who plays on for 0.9 second after a whistle should be given a yellow.

When we had 3 sent off at Walton Casuals, they stopped playing? It bloody seemed like it! Awful decision but as he's followed the letter of the law he's got a leg to stand on.

Grabbing the bloke round the neck could be seen as excessive force. As you say yourself, it is a matter of interpretation and up to the ref. It is not the letter of the law which explicitly refers to the action in the context of the situation.

The player in question was Dorch's player-manager Ashley Vickers, who (you could argue) was showing leadership and initiative. It's not as if he tackled the naked loon as soon as he ran on to the pitch - the guy loped around for quite a long time, with the lumbering stewards unable to apprehend him, until Vickers intervened. I daresay he thought he was doing the ref a favour.
I agree a red card was harsh in the circumstances. And one can speculate that Dorch's lingering sense of injustice led to their second and third red cards.

Stupid decision by the ref, makes Forbes' 2nd yellow against Lowestoft look sensible, that's how bad it is.
As for the 'hero' streaking. What a gimboid. Doubt he's even a Havant fan, just some attention-seeking loser. Hope he get's a lengthy ban. Oh, and Dorchester can get Vickers red-card over-turned.

The guy was a Havant fan. Because of the refs actions it could set a dangerous precedent. Lets get an oppo player sent off by entering the field of play and try and get one of them to tackle/smack you. Opps they're down to 10 men. That should give my team an advantage!
Vickers can point out to what happened in the Stevenage/Newcastle cup tie. The players could have been in danger (although from the video evidence it was unlikely, but who knows). The stewards didn't have a cat in hells chance of catching him.
OS is right. It's OK to grab Van Persie around the neck but to shoot a second after the whistle is blown in a bellowing stadium and get booked is just plain crazy. Common sense has gone out the window these days.

I have to say that common sense does appear to be lacking on this occasion. The guy brooke the law by enrting the field of the play (clothed or not!). Vickers was never a great advert on the pitch but in this instance he really has been given a raw deal (excuse the pun).
It was quite an amusing incident though & the reaction of the guys around the "amateur" clip available, is also amusing. The streaker must be a bit mad though.

No way the player should have been sent off. Absurd decision by an attention seeking loon!

Another example of a Ref completely out of his depth and unable to handle the situation.
