I understand why SUFC have invited Councillors and Council workers to free entry to the ground for bank holiday Monday fixture. It is obviously good publicity for the club and the borough.
However what about the supporters & season ticket holders who turn up week in week out during the good times and bad times travelling to far flung places like Dorchester and Hereford and Lowestoft etc etc.
We have community days and kids for free but i guess real supporters have to pay full dollar because we will always follow the U's .
At least make anybody from Sutton Council who turns up pay a small donation to charity.

Let's delete this thread before any council employees see it and are put off coming. And someone who knows him explain to Woodie the concept of publicity.

On a related matter, is it just open to Council employees, or people employed by the LBS. I know a couple of teachers in the area who are officially employed by LBS. Would they count?

If you're a supporter, why do you need incentive to come other than the team hopefully winning & doing well?
I think the offer is a good one.
Thread stays, but I've edited the title as that's not particularly fair TBH.

So actually us supporters who come through thick and thin actually get over 4 free games per season. Even more if you count pre season friendlies and reserve and youth games Maybe you should ask every season ticket holder to pay a small donation for charity on the last 4 games of the year. Real supporters get rewarded far more than the casual ones.

I had free entry for my first ever Sutton game (a 4-1 win over St Albans in March 1994). I apologise to all those kids back in the early to mid 90's who paid for their season ticket for my incredible cheek.............
Personally I think this is a great idea to let in council workers free on a one-off occasion. Hopefully it'll encourage some of them to come back at a later date. Everyone needs to have their 1st game at some point.

Gents, you have missed the point completely . I have supported the U'S for many many years and I will continue to follow them.
I understand the need for ongoing publicity.
But i do object to just local councilors and council employees being invited in for free. Why not extend it the local police , fireman ,nurses etc.
Tonyd - why do you object to this thread. Do you work for Sutton council.

TAZ and others . I do folow the U'S and always will. You all have your opinions - but I do disagree with inviting "ONLY "local council employees free entry on Easter Monday.

Think the club have done a great job promoting these last few games. Even if we get an extra 10 full time supporters out of it and a few future extra part time visitors it would have been completely worthwhile. We need to continue to raise the profile to progress. Hopefully more of the future generation in the area will start to follow Sutton as either a 2nd team or take them on instead of the usual Chelsea/Man United option.
Not sure about extending to all of the above you mention Wellie, I suppose a line has to be drawn somewhere and I'm sure there are reasons.

I do think Woodie raises a good point when he mentions other public sector workers. I know of other clubs who've done things like that in the past, and again like with the community fun days and possibly borough derby day it can only be good publicity for the club. And a nice attendance.

Tonyd - why do you object to this thread. Do you work for Sutton council. Because of the title you gave it (now amended by the mods) which would have given Council employees the impression that they would not be welcome by the club's fans. It is an interesting initiative by the club to attract more supporters, just like the kids go free or carers' day ideas. Anything that might build the supporter base and generate long term revenue for the club should be applauded by the club's supporters. I would be quite happy to try free entry for police, firemen etc, but I suspect there are many, many more council employees in the area than there are emergency services employees. And no I don't work for Sutton council. In fact, as I live in Purley, I don't even pay them money.

Woodie, yes, you have your opinion. Hence why the thread is still here and not deleted as per TonyD's request! The title of the thread was a bit out of order though. The council bods have been invited by SUFC. That makes them our guests should they choose to come, not 'freeloaders'. We had over a 100 carers here the other week for lunch AND the game. Are they 'freeloaders'? What about the kids as part of the Met fun day last week? And the SUFC juniors & their families also attending on BH Monday? The point is, we as supporters week in week out are rewarded for our efforts by the success\failure of the team. And we've just won a championship. What more can we want?

I think the point of inviting Councillors and those employed by the London Borough of Sutton is because the game being played is a derby day within the London Borough of Sutton. The reason for listing just those folks is purely because some limit has to be added. Otherwise, we could have said, free entry to anyone with an SM postcode. Point is, the club is raising awareness and in this case we've been chatting with our friends at the council and the idea sprung up. Teachers may even qualify if they are employed by the council under whatever guise LEAs are currently under.
Either way, we're boosting local awareness of our great club and it's the last home game of a title winning season. Can we not just enjoy it rather than moan about who is coming or what burger van may be in operation. FFS people - we're getting the league trophy on Monday - everyone should come and see us lift it.

From a marketing point of view, its probably our only event day that is really connected to the game itself. I think it's a great idea, especially as employees of LBS are not just 'councillors'. For us to lif tthe trophy against the 2nd biggest team in the borough and to raise awareness that we exist can only be good. Let's face it, we can't do that next season!

As someone a little bit involved with the community side of things, I find this subject a bit of a no brainer really. As with the Fun Day, Carers Day, Ladies football day etc, the object is to find as many different ways to attract new people through the gates of our club as is possible. At the end of the day our club like any other depends on new supporters coming along and these days give various groups who may not ordinarily come to a match a taste of the atmosphere. If you are already a supporter and pay to watch games then you have already been captured :-) Remember it is that money which pays the players wages without which we would not be champions today, and thats our reward! We need to promote out club and look to build its future, and hopefully next season all home Sat matches will have a theme to them
