Sutton - who played just four payers who are likely to start the season - were ok in defence but lacked ideas in the final third. Not a game that will live long in my memory. Did we play today After looking forward to this match on a 3g pitch at Maidstone's new ground, I am a little disappointed. As stated a very experimental line up, a very warm day and a pitch which lacked any life at all, didn't really add to the experience. Unfortunately the ground didn't feel friendly with too many over zealous rules and officials. I am told the pitch is effected by the temp which slows it down, but really didn't give a true bounce and there was no zip in the surface what so ever. It was crying out for water if thats what you do on a 3g pitch. I don't think we saw anywhere near our starting line up today, but of those on show the keeper did nothing wrong, and Charlie just commands the box whilst looking effortless. We lacked cohesiveness, the passing wasn't the best and not helped by a dead pitch. The Stones had a lot of the ball but lacked any attacking edge with the exception of Collin, and in the end we won with a good strike from Hibbet without ever playing well.

Puddy? Not that I recall.
Slow game on the artificial surface, which, apparently does slow up when it is hot. We left a number of our higher profile players to sit the match out.
Puddy ended the busier 'keeper and made some fine stops. Outfield, I thought Jordane Meade and Jordan Hibbert did the best out of the new guys and Max Kontic also built on a couple of previous performances.
Hibbert scored in the 88th min ending a good move with a finish high to Worgan's right.
Not sure how much i was enthused by the surface, it lacked zip. The ground was neat and tidy with good cover at both ends but not sure what it would be like viewing wise with a big crowd in, especially for us short arses.

Very poor viewing in a big crowd as i have experienced. Why we didn't use subs today,to try & win ,was a mystery to me.You might as well brought 5 subs from the youth team if you didn't intend to use them!

Perhaps Micky and PB just wanted to see some more from the boys on the pitch, we didn't need to win.

The guys on the bench will see plenty of football this season, so no probs in leaving them there yesterday. That is what friendlies are for. Test the new guys and trialists.

All the time it was 0-0 in the second half i kept looking over to the subs bench .Marvin was fanning himself with a towel and i kept thinking ,surely give some of these guys at least 10 mins.I suppose i get too used to winning under Dos no matter who the opposition is.
Can't wait for the season to start properly now.

Two more friendlies before our first league game now at Maidenhead. I did hear that the game yesterday was largely going to be for trialists and fringe players - understandable to not use the subs as the games on Tue and Wed last week must have taken their toll.
Important couple of weeks now in finalising the squad and signing up any of the trialists who have turned out for us recently.

....according to twitter new man in goal....Will Puddy...ex Salisbury According to their local press, Will Puddy is one of 3 Salisbury 2013/14 players who's not signed elsewhere yet. That was last Thursday, so he could well have been tapped up by now!

Just seen the pictures from the game Saturday and this might be a stupid question but can someone who went tell me what the black stuff was that is clearly seen coming off the pitch? As it's 3G it surely isn't dirt! And I guess gone are the days of carpet burns from these pitches

The rubber crumb is the essence of the pitch, it's why 3G resembles a natural surface in terms of bounce compared to the old Astrotruf pitches when the ball skidded off like facing a Michael Holding bouncer. Every year the pitch maintenance requires any "lost" crumb to be replaced (it gets into socks, boots etc).
It would be interesting to know what anyone who went to the game thought about the surface.

I was expecting better passing between the Sutton players, maybe the side we put out on Saturday lack the skill Did I hear you say Dave, Maidstone turned down the water system due to cost? Maybe watering the surface on dry days improves the playing surface...
