I do believe it was while coming home from Hitchin, that the supporters coach broke down.
We waited ages, then we were picked up by the players coach....... Oh happy days

Perhaps we ought to go to Hitchin on Saturday & voice our support for the old ground!

I went to the Hitchin v Banbury game last night. I'd forgotten just how good this ground looks, with its wooden terracing along one side and behind one goal. I thought this was my first visit since watching Sutton there in 1971, but I see from my records I saw Sutton lose there in 1996, which is why I've probably blanked it from my memory. I'm sure on my first visit they had planted daffodils along the front of the stand, I wonder if they will be there again in Spring?
It will be a tragedy for the occasional visitor like me if this ground was to go, but here is the issue. The club itself wants to redevelop the ground as they know it is not sustainable in its current format. Their real argument with the Trust that owns the ground is that they don't want to move out of the town centre, which I can quite understand. So it seems that one way or another this quaint old ground will be lost.

Blimey, that's a trek for a midweek football fix.
I can confirm that there were flowers growing in front of the stand in the early 70's. I remember them on my first visit, November 1970. God knows how they were growing at that time of year.

Don't think I could negotiate the wooden terracing now days. Remember being hemmed in the small car park for an hour after the game on one occasion. Also the quaint refreshment area at the back of one of the old buildings.

I assume it's long gone

As for the car park, they checked that my car was a 4x4 and asked me to park on the grass! No delays in getting out though.

I fell through the slats in that wooden terrace once whilst celebrating s goal at Top Field I asked two of their fans if the terrace itself was going to fall down (I was a cheeky kid at the time), and they told me they had built it with their own hands. Sorry chaps...
