Welcome to Edgar Street. Any sympathy with the locals for their plight disappeared long before the end of this match played on an uneven surface and after with one fella offering out any Sutton fan he could identify.
All because of an alleged dive by S H-P and then the sending off which saw H-P the victim of a two footed lunge that had no place on any football pitch. My view was obscured as to the dive allegation but I had a great view of the lunge and the ref was onto it like a flash; no hesitation with the red card.
Before all that, U's gave a way a bizarre goal which proved to be the only time U's goal experienced any direct threat for the whole 90 mims. Spills, playing in the centre-back role, headed the ball back to AJ and he inexplicably let the ball through his legs and it rolled into the net. Bad bounce or not it was not the greatest moment for U's 'keeper.
After that, defending the slope, the home side showed little ambition in going forward as U's sought the equaliser. It came when Ricky Wellard cut in from the left and struck a low shot from the edge of the box past the home 'keeper.
Neither side really threatened for the rest of the half then came the two H-P incidents either side of half-time.
Down to ten, the home side showed even less ambition than they had in the first half as Sutton continued to enjoy the lions share of possession. While the football was patient and neat, it lacked penetration and it was not until late in the game that Glenn Southam finally found some space in the penalty area and curled a lovely finish into the far corner. There was still time for a Southam penalty to produce a fine save form the HU keeper after Jamie White had been felled and the home side to muster their only effort on goal in the second period, a header that went harmlessly wide.
Whether anyone will see football again at Edgar St depends much on Monday's winding up order. The ground is in decline, the programme an absolute rip-off -although you can't blame them for charging £2 for it in their position - and some of their fans a throw-back to the bad old days.
For Sutton, it was a first ever win at Edgar Street, a first Sutton goal for the improving Ricky Wellard, a few grand for winning the tie and a place in the next round. It weren't pretty but it was good enough.

To add to that,we dominated the match from start to finish but every ball in the air in their box was won by a Hereford defender. We badly need a Jessy type replacement asap.

We had plenty of headers won. But I agree with your assessment of domination. If this team are better than Burgess Hill then we must have been awful because our performance in the first half was poor especially in the first 20mins. I wouldn't let an own goal worthy of inclusion on the next Danny Baker video take away the fact that we were all over the place. But after that it was a perfect reason why Southam was signed. Aside from a goal he was the linchpin that gave us a victory today. Not a huge amount to add about our performance to what Frakey said. Don't know much about the altercation between the two benches either, but if you were one of the small minority of our fans who spent the entire game slagging off Wellard and Hart then perhaps your time is better spent giving these players a bit of support when they do something right. Wellard in particular had a good game i thought and made the effort to acknowledge the support of the United faithful today both during and after the game. As for Hereford it's a little sad to see what's happening there and maybe that will be the last game. Such a shame to see a decent side and what was a nice ground fall from grace like that. It's almost 19 years to the day since we first went and it was a polar contrast to then. At least for the first time we didn't come away empty handed.

Five years ago we lost 2-0 at Edgar Street in front of an FA Cup crowd of 1713. Yesterday's attendance was given as 494. That's a sad sign of what's happened at Hereford in the intervening years, and the last six months in particular. Satisfying though it was to end our run of defeats at this ground, the morgue-like ambiance lent a faint hollowness to the victory.
Hereford played like the away side, conceding territory but threatening sporadically on the break. They were the underdogs for once. Yet the manner in which we went behind looked as if we were trying to confirm a tired cliche about the comically poor standard of non-League football. Thankfully our players showed a professional spirit by seeking then scoring an equaliser, Wellard's first goal for the club. Once the Bulls had been reduced to ten men early in the second half we rarely looked in any trouble, and although Glen Southam's sweetly-struck winner arrived late in the game, there was an inevitability about it. His subsequent failure from the penalty spot was academic. We're through to the first round proper.

I was wondering what had happened to the Cattle Market but a local informed me that Debenhams was on it now.Shame.It added a bit of character to the place.
