As for refs being incompetent, I suggest that the number of slo-mo action replays that blanket TV coverage is giving us a false expectation of what competence is. Anyway, as Dos said, the ref wound up the crowd and improved the atmosphere, so well done ref. Lets have Brian have the final word on this:

On a related point, I can't help but feel that Glen gets more bookings than he should because he is in the ref's face (and earholes) so often. The refs are only human and who would blame them if they took the opportunity to get back at a player if he gives them the chance. As for the decision which seemed to send some people into meltdown, I thought at the time that the handball was purely accidental, the defender turning his back as the cross went straight at him. I know that handball is often given in those circumstances but I don't agree with that, it should be kept for deliberate actions. As for his arms not being in a natural position, what is the natural position for ones arms when a ball is blasted towards you? As for refs being incompetent, I suggest that the number of slo-mo action replays that blanket TV coverage is giving us a false expectation of what competence is. Anyway, as Dos said, the ref wound up the crowd and improved the atmosphere, so well done ref. I had no view of the first half handball so didn't complain. What annoys me most about refs at this level is their inability to work out what is a yellow and what isn't and dish them out to both sides accordingly. Also, because a player is short in stature doesn't mean they can be grabbed, pulled etc and get nothing. Billy Medlock was dragged everywhere; no wonder he got booked for making a comment. But winding us up brings the worst out of us and we can't have that!!

I would say under the criteria given, that my comments to the officials come under the non abusive category then? I shouted he was awful to him on Saturday, I think Frakey shouted he was diabolical both in a somewhat robust manner. There were chants of 'w*nker w*nker' towards the ref at Hemel from those behind the goal 'sallycat'? You sound like you're accusing me of shouting w*nker! What's the question mark for? You are correct, there were indeed. Whether what you shouted was abusive depends on your phrasing. Telling him his decision is awful or ridiculous isn't abusive, I agree. Not that I'd do it myself, but nobody would accuse me of being perfect I'm surprised people think this sort of thing improves the atmosphere. I find being in a crowd of angry, aggressive people shouting really nasty insults pretty unpleasant. But hey, we're all different.

Hello all, dont even ask why im reading this so late but anyway, first time poster and all that. I feel a little compelled to share my experience at GGL last year. I took my young son down to watch a game, being a chelsea fan it felt right to get him into his local club as well. I read earlier in this thread that there was a ginger chap being quite rude... When I went the same gentleman was behaving in such a disgusting manner that I felt very uncomfortable taking my son back again and dealing with him asking me what a c*** was. I raised it to the twitter account but was told to go and speak to the club (i thought the twitter account was the club) and got the general impression that nobody really cares and nothing would be done. The club has lost two future paying, attending, supporters as a result. Something should really be done about the attitude within that small number in the stands, especially this gentleman who seemed to be adored by morons around him thanks to his colourful vocabulary. Either kick these people out of the club or stop marketing it as a family club. Those who respond to the advertising are simply left with a sour impression that means they will never come back. Over a season we would probably spend £20 over 10 home games, so his foul mouth has actually cost the club earnings, and that is just me.........! Good luck to the club for next season, will be following closely as ever .

Hi Alphaplank, Sorry that was your experience but I can assure you that the club very much does care and if we are thinking of the same occasion action was taken. Just because actions were taken in private does not mean nothing happened. That individual was spoken to by a club official, as were others, and warned as to future conduct and extra stewarding was posted in that area of the ground to monitor and help control behaviour.

140 characters on Twitter is not really the best channel, recommending contact via the website is entirely appropriate if the opportunity to speak with a steward or club official at the actual event has been missed.
The inference that this is uncaring is a bit of a leap; I am amazed at the number of people (generically) that raise issues / complaints on Twitter to all manner of organisations and brands, expecting an immediate investigation, solution, trial and punishment in an instant via Twitter. It's the age we live in I suppose!

Good luck to the club for next season, will be following closely as ever . Come back and give it another go. As you say it is a very small number. There is a family enclosure and plenty of places to stand where you'll find a friendly atmosphere and no issue with bad language. Your son will hear the language sooner or later and perhaps it's better to hear it when you're around so you can point out right from wrong!
