What a miserable afternoon that turned out to be. The worst kind of football weather for what, the fourth match in succession? Two goals conceded from set plays and out of the Trophy in a blink of an eye. Then "bog-gate" of which I will comment upon later.
Things on the pitch really didn't go great. With the wind on U's backs in the first half the most attacking threat came from Sutton with BTA a constant threat. U's made good progress but the ball in the last third wasn't quite right and in the end only a fantastic strike from BTA separated the sides and I feared it would not be enough. The goal of the season so far for me, with the wind or not.
And it proved not to be enough as a Bromley side that had struggled into the wind in the first half was a different animal and they attacked with purpose but for all that their open play produced one shot on target that was well saved by Jamie B. The two goal will I expect be a disappointment to Dos et al. The first, Hooper got to the ball before Jamie B - if the keeper comes he has to make it, he didn't - and the second i would have to applaud Porter for his excellent movement to make the space to glance home. Bromley's dead ball delivery was excellent throughout and something U's will need to be wary off in the coming festive fixtures.
If I am being honest I would prefer the late non-penalty incident not to have happened for two reasons. Firstly, because I could have walked out of the ground accepting the better side had won without the sour taste of another abomination of an Allison decision. The second I wouldn't have got the disapproving looks off the couple under the brolly as they left for what I called the ref or what I said to their coward fans the other side of two fences for their comments directed at me. I give as good as I get and more. Deserved disapproval at that.
As for Allinson what the hell is the guy doing on a NL level pitch? That's two blatant penalties he has ignored for us this season. Why do the FA think it's ok to inflict him twice upon U's in the two biggest cup competitions in one season? He wanders around the pitch like he's just walked out of a house explosion - dazed, incapable of understanding what is going on around him. He had a perfect view of the challenge on skip who was about to force an unlikely late equaliser when he was felled. He just stood there staring as if he couldn't believe what he had just seen so totally ignored it. Twenty seconds later he was giving Bromley a free-kick on the edge of our box for an innocuous challenge in comparison.
He books Bairdy in the first half for his forceful complaint about the challenge that ended Bradley Pearce's afternoon. The evidence was clear to everyone who saw the state of Brad's shin but that's ok. Course significant injury is fine say something untoward about it and it is a yellow. For the second time this season we lost a player because of an opposition player's challenge and didn't even get a free-kick. Allison and Brook - referees or clowns in the kit? You choose.
So onto bog-gate. I read pg's comments and also that of Gandermoniun via twitter. They, look very similarly. I am not going to stand in judgement only to say that I doubt Bromley FC are particularly impressed and no doubt we will end up footing the bill for any repairs.
Obviously , nobody from GM went in there after as I did. Mustard squirted over the WC doors, the paper dispenser removed without correct tools from the wall and the hot water spout bent round the other way and therefore useless. Certainly no crime of the century but not a reflex action either. To pick up a mustard squeeze bottle and then take it into the loos is a premeditated act. Not like punching the wall you're standing next to or, dare I say, unsuccessfully, kicking a fence post (ho hum).
Hardly puts a great light on us as a collective and bearing in mind it was Sutton fans who were going to use them after, hardly an act of solidarity either.
So, now the facts are known; not quite just a case of bog roll being thrown about. Short of burning the bloody things down what constitutes an act being a blemish on the club?
If this a fan having a go at other fans then apologies but it is what I saw (I hate mustard by the way) and who else other than a Sutton fan is going to have done that in the "away" corner of the ground yesterday afternoon?
We can complain about the lack of covering offered to visiting clubs at Hayes Lane but after yesterday I am not sure Bromley FC will have much sympathy.
One plus from yesterday. I would recommend the blue puffa jackets on sale in the shop. Warm and waterproof. Did the job totally.
Back up north for a wonderful pre-Christmas present from the National League; just what are they trying to prove with such scheduling?
