So presumably they couldn't bring on a substitute. Not if a player is sent off.

No, if the substitution is not complete, ie one player has left the pitch and the second player has been given permission to enter the field of play, the dismissal mean no sub.

I have yet to see a sinbinning. At a match between Varndenians and Oakwood I had to go for a pee and in the couple of minutes that took Oakwood conceded a penalty, Varndenians scored, the keeper protested, got sinbinned and I missed it all! ☹️ Then at Wellington v Exmouth a couple of weeks ago, a Wellington player got a sinbin yellow and, as he walked off, turned and spat in the direction of the ref and got an immediate red card. So I’ve not actually seen a complete sinbin cycle. P.S. I apologise for using sinbin as a compound verb, noun and adjective.
