To be fair we've been to plenty of grounds who have struggled to accommodate adequately a much smaller travelling Sutton contingent under segregation and these are in the same league! Anyone who has been to Bromley, Aldershot, Maidenhead or York in those conditions will know none of them have been exactly glorious experiences regardless of the football! Andy, not sure they've struggled to accommodate. Rather, they had plenty of space to play with but for reasons best known to themselves, decided to be miserly and squeeze us into a space the size of a shoe box! York for example have a reasonably large (for this level) away terrace but decided to only open a fraction of it.
What was the issue at Aldershot? I've only ever been there with Gills and we were given the usual away allocation (part of the covered terrace and the bit round the corner). Presume they "did a York"?
When I say struggle, that could always have been a choice by the home club! There was a farcical issue at Aldershot a few years back I think for the FA Cup tie where they gave us a small area of the seating which didn't actually have enough seats for us all. York did exact what you said and both Maidenhead and Bromley did similar things where virtually no cover was provided in differing circumstances - Bromley in the blazing sunshine and Maidenhead in the pouring rain. I can think of plenty of grounds that have been much more accommodating e.g Leyton Orient, Wrexham, Maidstone, Macclesfield, Tranmere, Hartlepool etc but others in our league where the away supporter experience is negatively swayed by the space we're given and usually they are not ex league clubs. It's just the nature of the beast. In terms of Slough, when we went there, there wasn't any particular issue I remember with our allocation (aside from of course not being able to be behind either goal) and I saw all of the game easily, although that night I wouldn't have been too upset to have my view obscured

Rebel23, absolutely, I'm sure the ground is more than adequate for a National South match. No argument from me at all about that. I would say, though, that if STFC have ambitions to step up a level to the National Prem, the away supporters would probably need to be re-housed, possibly behind one of the goals, because there are a decent handful of ex-league teams (in particular) who will bring more than 800 followers, depending on the time of the season and distance involved, of course. I wish I'd visited for one of the CONIFA games, last summer, instead. That would've been a much better experience. Re the Gills cup tie in question, you were very unlucky to lose to us on the day. Oldaker's goal was a moment of brilliance but we didn't really turn up and if you'd had your shooting boots on I think we would've been out on the day, never mind a replay. How many games are segregated in the NL? hopefully not many which should alleviate the problem. As what happened with Sutton, giving the away team one of the ends would make perfect sense. On the Gillingham game, yes you could say we were unlucky but as we all know it's all about putting the ball in the net and on the night we failed to do that.

More segregation than you'd think and not always the obvious games. Sutton v Halifax for example has had enforced segregation, when we went to Southport we were segregated, and Barrow. Bromley as well, and Eastleigh, and Woking. All the ex-league sides do. Recently Maidstone decided to enforce segregation at all of their home fixtures following an incident involving up to 50 people. It's definitely bubbling under the surface at certain fixtures in the NLP and when you throw an ex-league team into the mix, most of them will have some sort of organised element and if you don't segregate you run the risk of disorder. It's a sad reflection but prevention's often better than cure.

Thought Barnet was bizarre last season we pretty much filled the 1/3rd of the stand behind the goal but they would not open any of the remaining 2/3rd even though it was empty. From a tactical viewpoint keeping the area behind the goal clear of away supporters helps the home keeper and lessens the enjoyment of thecaway support. We should consider putting the away fans in a corner if we can.

It's a very shabby way of treating supporters. You'd think that clubs in this league would accept the financial reality of needing as many bums on seats as possible, which includes visitors and treat them as you should with paying customers i.e. with respect and not as a mere inconvenience.

First line-up of the season. Few trialists as expected.

Seems like other matches or issues dominate a thread about our first PSF.
So those who don't know, won 3 0 with Ajiboye, Jarvis and a "trialist" finding the net. Hard to read much into any first friendly but Ajiboye impressed me the most.

Wabo got the 3rd goal, he's on Southend's books. Could be a good loanee striker for us, at least until Wrighty's up and running again.

Who was Tosun last with? Do we know anything about him? The match report on the official site mentions George Tosun having played in Australia and previously spent a short time at Aldershot. I couldn’t make it to Slough yesterday but a friend who went commented he looked very useful. A note on the other trialists - Dan Matsuzaka - a centre-back was with Braintree last season - I think we’d need 4 in this league so he could well fill that last spot. Rob Milsom - previously with Notts County and has a lot of Football League experience - I think plays left-back. I’ve seen Wabo’s name previously when he was on loan at Ebbsfleet and Maidstone but I’m not sure if we need any more strikers. Ayoola (not Ayooga as listed on the team sheet) was previously with Stoke City’s u-23’s (as stated in the match report). Dudzinski was with Havant last season.

Always difficult to make much from a pre-season friendly, particulalry the first but Eastleigh had apparently been impressed with Slough and I thought we nullified them for much of the match with Dudzinski only really extended late on when he made a fine save from a swept close range effort.
The two central defenders - Goodliffe and Matsuzaka - looked reasonably solid. Jude Mason belies his age with some impressive performances.
George Tosun had varied success. He certainly has the confidence to run at players and looked a greater threat when switched to the right.
U's three goals came from one mazy run and finish and another fine finish before the late cock up between Turner and his no 8 saw Wabo profit with a neat shot.
A decent start to Matt G's reign for sure.

Didn't go to the game but we appear to have some trialists with reasonable pedigree.
