We were better in the replay You're not wrong. And that leads nicely into this bit of footage I've found on Youtube. It's actually one of the most magical bits of Sutton footage I've ever seen. Unedited and scenes you really don't see at football anymore. The officials clapping the losing side off the pitch? There's something about this footage that actually makes you feel like you are part of it, rather than being a spectator, and it's actually hard to believe that it was over 32 years ago. Enjoy it!

I remember that evening as though it was yesterday. We were superb that night and that was a great team who were of course truly part time.
Additionally 2 things strike me about revisiting that footage...
Firstly that the crowd was pretty significant (about 18,000 if I recall) and if that same fixture was repeated these days, how many home fans would show up for a midweek FA Cup match against lower league opposition? About half?
Also Boro's current goalkeeper is Aynsley Pears, the son of Stephen who kept goal at GGL, but was subsequently injured for the replay

CHESHIRE.
Hope all’s well.
Interesting point you make regarding the attendance.
We might see a return to those levels post Covid, however I also believe it’s the hype of the PL and the so called big clubs that has dwindled attendances away from these matches we are talking about.
You can’t miss a Man Utd, Liverpool top in any major city anywhere around the world.
It’s a fat cats world.

We were kept in the ground until the home support had dispersed so, what with extra time, it was pretty late before we got back to the coaches. We then had to wait for all the coaches to be ready so that the police could escort us in convoy out of town. And while we were waiting, captain Tony Rains went from coach to coach thanking us for our support and apologising for not getting a result. No apology necessary! The second thing is that as we left town, Boro supporters stopped to applaud us. What memories!

The other thing Tony was that they were probably the same supporters that were extremely hostile towards us as we approached the ground banging on the coaches and spitting. Was very unpleasant

Yes, they were fine come the end but the start had a slight delay when Trevor Roffey got greeted by a barrage of coins. His photo (after he had been struck) took up most of the back page of the Daily Mirror.

Agree Sol but also its more than that IMO...when i was a nipper, Football on a Saturday was great but an FA Cup match was extra special and the Cup Final was the biggest day of the year. Ask a younger fan who has only known the era of Sky/Premiership/Foreign Imports and they will likely think of the FA Cup in the same way as they think of pre-season friendlies...

FA Cup Final It's a Knockout. It's a Knockout was a brilliant idea. I wish they would bring it back when all this is all over. Great entertainment.

Today's Sutton video rarity - until the AFC Wimbledon game, possibly my favourite ever Sutton game that I witnessed. FA Trophy Semi Final v Wycombe 1993. The short highlights don't do the game justice - 2 sides going for it for 90 mins. Shame then 2nd leg happened (Also on the same clip")
