Just came across this article and very sad news it seems, I haven't seen anything from the club but may have missed it, apologies if so. For many, many years I had great conversations with Ronnie in the VPs and only in more recent times did I realise just what a life he had led. A real gent and never let on, incredibly self-effacing and I am only saddened that I did not get more opportunity to find out more. A club servant and patron for as long as I can remember, others will know more. I enquired after him a few months ago and understood that Sylvia Holland was in touch with him and I offered to bring him to a match if he felt up to it, sadly nothing came of this. If you go on You Tube there is an amazing video where Dustin Hoffman specifically requested to play with Ronnie; so modest was Ronnie that he never told stories of this or his big band history. RIP Ronnie, a true gent and thank you for the times in the VPs and much, much more. www.google.com/amp/s/londonjazznews.com/2020/04/13/ronnie-hughes-1925-2020/amp/

Such a shame to read that Millsy, I got to know Ronnie quite well when I took over running the Goal Sponsorship from Barry Aplin, Ronnie and Tony Stacey could always be found, with their cash ready to pay me when I walked into the VP's Lounge.........It wasn't until I watched "Len Goodman's Big Band Bonanza" shown on BBC4 a few years ago that, when he was a lot younger that he was such a famous saxaphone player "back in the day" with The Ted Heath Orchestra
RIP Ronnie

How strange, I was only thinking about him yesterday. What a lovely guy Ronnie was. Great to talk to, full of generous spirit and great humour.
It wasn't untill a few years after I first met him that I found out what a name he was in the jazz genre of music. Reading that obituary is even more impressive.
But it was as a football fan and Sutton supporter that I knew him. A truly lovely guy. What a great age he made too. RIP Ronnie.

So saddened to learn of the passing of Ronnie. Like others, I spent time talking, or rather listening, to Ronnie and was fascinated with his recollections of life with big bands. I think one of his proudest memories was playing in the band which backed Sinatra when he toured this country, but he was also so proud to have been "discovered" again for his part in Quartet. Apart from his support of our club Ronnie was also an avid Liverpool supporter. Rest in Peace Ronnie.
