Last night I went to Merstham v Kingstonian. You’ll be happy to know that they still sing about hating Sutton and apparently, if you’re a Sutton fan you should surrender or die. Apart from friendlies, we haven’t played them for 10 years or so I think? Isn’t it about time they picked on someone their own size, Corinthian Casuals or the Bobbins or someone? Won’t be long before many of their yoof won’t ever have seen us play.

I wonder when it first started. I remember watching a Surrey Senior Cup quarter-final at Kingsmeadow in 1998 when both clubs were challenging for promotion from the Ryman Premier. On their way to giving us a 4-0 drubbing they began chanting (amongst others) “F*ck all, you’re gonna win f*ck all”. What a charming bunch, I thought at the time. Now I just pity them. They have nothing but their memories of the Chapple era. Memories that are fast becoming dim and distant.

We remember the idiots a few years back that turned up to the SSC game at Corinthian Casuals and tried to smash the door to the dressing room down to attack Steve McKimm. Every club has their idiots, but you'd have to be a real low class of idiot to do that behaviour, and I don't think I've seen lower than the K's for that, so your report Tony doesn't surprise me one bit. Living in the past of a few years of fame which ended up losing their ground as the price.

They haven’t finished above Sutton in the Pyramid since 2001. They’re stuck in the Isthmian league playing at someone else's ground. They are pretty much irrelevant now, other than as a source of comedy.

Personally I always harbored more resentment towards Kingstonian, partly because of their success based on overspending (jealous at the time of course) and partly because of the FA Trophy semi final demolition which goes down as one of the worst nights eve. When you look at the squad they had then its not hard to see that they were unsustainable. several of those players should have been at least two levels above and they could have won the trophy every season and it wouldn't have paid the wages. Carshalton, I actually miss that rivalry and I'd much rather see them promoted than the ks. Screw those guys

I've just discovered that Cardiacs' frontman Tim Smith, who sadly passed away a couple of months ago, is from Carshalton. I don't mind if the Bobbins get promoted now.

To be fair, anyone born at St Helier Hospital (probably a fair number of us) might be said to come from Carshalton. Maybe he preferred the Us

There have been a few mentions of Carshslton Athletic on this thread.
I must admit that for me the only real local derby for me could only ever be between us and the Robins.
I live much closer to Colston Avenue than I do to GGL. Like many of us I guess, I get a number of local football matters popping up on my mobile phone quite regularly. A recent one was advertising a Robins' forthcoming match and it mentioned that the maximum crowd permitted would be 600 persons.
I look forward to that day when we start to have crowds once more.

It probably depends on when you started watching the U's.
For me, late 60s, Carshalton were Athenian League so not on our radar. For several years the big local games were Kingstonian and Tooting, and the 213 and 280 buses were like Supporters' Club coaches for midweek away games (Richmond Road and Sandy Lane, not the modern grounds). Leatherhead then joined the Isthmian League and a brief rivalry emerged, partly because they signed Chris Kelly from us, before Carshalton joined us in the Isthmian top-flight in 1977. To me those games felt like proper derbies, especially over the festive period; escaping with a draw after trailing 4-1 at home; Micky Joyce getting booked for asking the ref if he had gotten his whistle for Christmas.
Although Dulwich and Bromley are not far away, they have never felt like derby matches to me.

Whereas Bromley has to me a bit, because I started going in the mid-90s when their fans seemed determined to wind us up as much as possible!
