I got out of the habit of buying programmes a few years ago as I was selling them on match days so would have a sneak peek. Then I moved to Dorset and whilst I come back often it’s an extra expense on what is already an expensive day. Add to that the general downward trend of programme sales everywhere anyway as everything is online it must sometimes seem there is little point in producing one sometimes.
I bought the Maidenhead programme online and thought it was a really good read. Just bought and read the Notts County edition and thought I would put something on here.
I would encourage anyone who has not read it recently or not bothered this season to give it a go. I will be honest in saying that the content is what you would expect. Matt Gray gives his thoughts and Lyall gives the usual welcome along with news from the club and anything else we need to know. Both these seem more informative than I remember.
However, I am sure it would be no surprise to anyone that Mark Frake’s articles garner most interest. The series on post war managers must have started last season and alas I missed those but really enjoyed the write up on JR and then Ian Hazell. What got me typing today though is the A-Z of SUFC over the years. The Notts County programmes focus is on the letter B and the first thing that met my eye was the name Doug Barnes. Memories suddenly flooded back of when I started out as a ball boy in the early 80’s. We had to do reserve games and Doug was always there and was such a friendly gent. He would always chat with me and my mum when we arrived and was so welcoming to us newcomers. As time passes by and life goes on I need things like this just to jog the memory and remember one of the reasons I love this club.
As an aside, the A-Z also made me search Boldmere St Michael's FC on Google maps
So to all that are continuing to put the programme together I say thank you and I look forward to the rest of them as I will be following the A-Z with interest
