Sutton go into the match tonight against an improving Chesterfield team.
If we play the same as we have recently been doing and don't have too many injuries from Saturday then 3 points should be ours. We do have to keep an eye on Tom Denton who seems to be their main threat up front.

As was the case on Saturday, a victory for us and defeat for Torquay will see us top. Obviously we can't drop any places tonight. Torquay host Maidenhead who somehow have found themselves in 4th (no one would have said that from their performance on the opening day of the season). One match to watch out for tonight for more than one reason is Stockport's trip to woeful Barnet. Not only because they are our next opponents (which further to DaveF's plea about Sutton fans not going to Stockport, I believe they are in Tier 3 so are playing behind closed doors anyway and therefore only an idiot will try!), they're 10 point behind us with 4 games in hand so mathematically on PPG, they lie in 2nd place. A result up there on Saturday will go a long way to define how successful this season can be. Just out of interest, this is what the table looked like in 17/18 after we'd played 12 games. Aside from us at the top (albeit with fewer points than we have got so far this season), look at who was in 24th www.footballwebpages.co.uk/national-league/league-table/2017-2018/date/20170923

0-1 to Chesterfield FT. Disappointing.

First 20mins we were all over them but failed to score, they got a lot tighter and worked their way into the game, if we have a weakness its the goal we conceded, a carbon copy a few recently, I.e. D&R, Kings Lynn, headers from around the 6 yard box especially from set pieces or crosses just slung into the box.
We didn't have the cutting edge upfront as we did on Saturday, and in truth Chesterfield defended very well, and they would see it as the perfect away performance which it was.
Tuesday Night home to lower table clubs, doesn't traditionally end well, but no real harm done tonight.

One game too many for me! Very defensive Chesterfield and once they got the goal just sat in and made it hard for us to play the ball with any purpose. A bit frustrating because when we play a defensive team we do fined hard to brake them down. The new lad looks promising! We are still second six points clear of Nots county with a long way too go off the season. I Noted at the end how disappointed Harry was! Shows what this club means to him a true legend.

We couldn't score against the best defence I've seen this season. One mistake from us cost us the game.
We don't like Tuesdays at times. All 3 league defeats have happened midweek. Torquay and Stockport winning not good for us but Notts losing means we're still in 2nd with a 6 point advantage.

It is appropriate that a club from a town famous for a church steeple should field Tom Denton. Giant and Sutton bogeyman. The Spirites returned home with 3 points, but 6 yellow cards mainly issued for some cynical blocks and tackles - done to halt U's break-aways. U's were turned around at the ko and played better as usual when attacking the GGL goal.
Those at the match probably did not see the half time show on SUTV, which was the highlights of an earlier season's home game v Chesterfield. Kenny Davis in that game showed what was missing tonight - a midfield with the skill to keep the ball while constructing the next attack.
A familiar frustration was U's reluctance to use the left wing when attacking the Collingwood Road end. Every time they did - which was not often enough - Chesterfield's defence looked shaky and was often breached. This contrasted with our right flank which was overloaded with attackers and defenders. On that flank Chesterfield were comfortable. David just could not beat the numbers most times he got the ball. Culprits include Lewis who never played a forward pass to the left in the second half.

In the battle between former Aldershot Assistant Managers it was Chesterfield's James Rowe who emerged smiling.
Not for the first time recently we didn't make the most of a strong opening half-hour. Their goal, a glancing header, came from one of several monster throws hurled into our area. I can't recall us conceding a similar goal this season. Normally we defend those well.
After half-time we couldn't find much of a rhythm, and the visitors defended their lead well.
Notts County and Maidenhead helped us out by also losing this evening, preserving that six-point cushion below us.

Awful game of a thousand throw ins. They edged a tight one. Felt they deservedly led at ht and defended it well. We couldn’t find a bit of quality to open them up and get a goal or 2. We move on.

Not sure we deserved to lose but didn't do enough to win it.
Best chance fell to Harry B but for once he couldn't take advantage.
They were happy to defend for much of the second half having shown glimpses of decent play in the first and when you can bring Denton back to win the high ball you have an advantage.
Not sure the identity of their goal scorer was correct but if it was the guy named, he shouldn't have been on the pitch. Got away with a late clattering foul on David A before hauling Isaac down on the halfway line. Both were yellows but as ever in the NL the ref wasn't up to the task only giving one for the second challenge.
Not the end of the world and on to a tough trip to Tier 3 on Saturday and by then Sutton could be in it as well.

The facts are Chesterfield had a rest on Saturday whilst we had a physically demanding match against a dirty solihull side. My learned friend described it as a 'pyrrhic' victory, clearly took its toll on the lads as they did not have the spark to break down a determined visiting side. The goal came against the run of play but they defended it very well. The big (only) chance fell to the usually reliable Harry, and when that was blasted over it was clear we would get nothing out of the game.
When a team sits as deep as they did you need either relentless energy or a moment of magic to breakthrough, we had neither and with very limited options off the bench as well (is Kealy cut out for this level, I can't see any sign that he is?). We could have done with a bit more nous up front and really missed Omar, whilst Harry and Craig must have been very tired from Saturday and with no Milson or Davis they had to put in another full shift.
With games and covid postponements coming thick and fast, there are going to be many more occasions where one side will be much fresher than the other, but it will bite them later down the line as the games pile up. I'd much rather be sitting with points on the board than playing catch up like other sides that could conceivably overtake us with games in hand. Its going to be a very demanding season!
