To me, there's a very big difference between "having a very good defence" and "playing defensively" but what do I know? More than Rod Liddle. Obviously.

Liddle is an appalling human who will write anything for a reaction, especially when he has no knowledge of a subject

I bought the paper yesterday as I saw a 'taster'from the article online on my smart phone. A very biased tone to the article. He referred to 'piegate'. A 3g pitch hater. A Millwall supporter probably, based on his remarks about them needing our smashing loanee Isaac Olaofe back in May. I am not sure what the point of his article was in all honesty.

Scrolling down below the article, I see there’s a good, informed response from a Mark, which got a grudging acknowledgement from Liddle. Must have been one of our Marks (Frakey or AA perhaps) because you don’t generally get that kind of erudition from football fans elsewhere! Certainly wasn't me responding. Suggesting we have been a yo-yo club over the last decade is as inaccurate as much of the actual ST article itself. Hardly a shock that a national newspaper knows little about a n-l football club. What appears to be lazy journalism of this sort about the n-l game has been appearing in the national press for years.

This article from Liddle is straight out of the 'Little old Sutton' songbook. Fair enough he is Hartlepoool but despite the comments below the Times article fawning over the supposed clever writing it is a nasty piece. Describing Shaw as 'hideously obese' and of course our manage as bald, fair enough he is but this owes much to the Liddle nastiness. His description of our artificial pitch is with keeping with the tone of the article clearly wrong. Give me Henry Winter any day.

The disgraceful behaviour of Wayne Shaw rumbles on.Without that incident i don't think Rod Liddle would be writing about Sutton United at all.
If and when Sutton United get promoted i fear we can "look forward" to more stories about Shaw's antics ,eclipsing ,or at least subtracting from, what would be a great achievement.

I am pretty sure he was born in the Middlesboro area, hence the Hartlepool references!!

What a load of Tripe from Liddle. In all material opinions he is wrong. "Second most Suburban" forgetting Crystal Palace, Leyton Orient, Watford.
The ball does not bounce more on 3G than on a damp but not sodden grass pitch, especially the New Balance ball in use this season which is a distinct improvement on the Jako ball.
The 'distinct home advantage' seems to be countered by the only stat that matters - our near parallel home and away form.
'Balding' implies some hair still present. The inaccuracy of that observation is matched by the rest of the article. A hack, not a journalist.

Let's not forget London isn't the only place that has suburbs. I'd say Tranmere and Bolton's grounds are pretty suburban, as are Oxford United's, Sheffield Wednesday's, Swansea's... OK, it was just a daft flippant remark trying to be funny and he wasn't trying to be technically accurate, but it's still annoying.

At the risk of sounding morbid, whenever the fateful day may be, this would make a fitting epitaph for Rod Liddle's tombstone.
