Frustrating though it is, I will take anything I can get out of this season. Come next season hopefully live streaming will be a distant memory, and if all goes well the club will be looking at a totally different and fully professional setup. That's not to decry the work done by our gifted and enthusiastic amateurs all of which I'm sure I'd recognise on the street purely by their voices.

I've taken a lot of pleasure out of our streaming and commentaries, this season. Even when it's been a little creaky. I've become quite a big Ahmed fan.
But I come to this with an emotional connection to the club. I don't mind the creaks. If I were an opposition fan paying good money for a service that breaks down, then I would not think well of us.

I'm sorry to hear the media team received abuse. What platform was that on, and was it reported appropriately?
Glad none of it was on this forum, though. I've read all the posts on here. There has been a lot of frustration and a fair bit of criticism but thankfully no abuse. I hate to criticise volunteers who are working so hard for us, but you can't improve and tailor your service to your customers' needs and preferences without listening to and taking on board any constructive criticism they may offer. That sort of criticism is a gift, because it's very difficult to assess quality from an inside perspective. I know from my own job that service providers who react defensively to constructive criticism do not provide a good service that is what their customers want, because they're not listening to them. Thankfully, I don't think we have that problem here. Just a few issues the team can't do much about, and a few things that are within their power to improve if they listen to what people are saying, which I'm sure they will.
No excuse whatsoever for turning that into abuse.

We've been down this road before. I don't think there is anyone here who expects 4k broadcast quality and a Brian Moore to come out of the blue.
I can't speak for others, but having watched every away live stream this season, I automatically compare their service with ours. Some were obviously very polished, some unlike us didn't have things like replays. Some had different camera angles. Some were stunningly good for non league, whilst others were a bit cringy. I think we've all in some shape or form made a judgement on an away stream in this way, but also because we've paid for a service. If I remember rightly, at least one of our supporters got a refund from Aldershot early in the season because their stupid "auto camera" was terrible. I'm sure they got it right in the end, but it was obvious there that they didn't bother to test and fine tune it. And that's exactly what we need to do. Fine tune what we have. I remember talking to a friend who was a Stockport fan who asked "Do you always only live stream in 720p?". It's things like this where we have budget constraints, but looking at the more hi tech streams I've seen this season, almost all of them have significant sponsorship. So maybe that's what's missing on the technical side?
On the personnel side, without taking anything away from our volunteers, the ones I've been impressed with have been the commentators and interviewers who have generally been calm and clear. I think making a young volunteer commentate on their own for 90 minutes in a high pressure situation actually makes things worse. There is no reason whatsoever that a co-commentator couldn't come in with one of their main functions being to actually allow the main commentator a bit of breathing space. At this level that's exactly how the best ones work. Ideally that co commentator should be someone who isn't the same as the main commentator. I'll be frank here and expecting a young volunteer with limited experience to be under that intense pressure of delivering over 90 minutes on their own I feel is actually SUFCTV not doing appropriate duty of care for that individual, and actually has almost invited that abuse (not that it is justified).
We have a whole network of ex players we are in contact with - has thought ever gone into putting a call out to them to see if any of them would like to co-commentate? (as other clubs have done). And there are a fair number of very eloquent fans among us, with knowledge of the club that stretches back decades, that could also fill that role. The whole idea of co-commentating is sharing the load and tag team. It takes a special individual to pull that off on their own for an entire game, and I expect our volunteers have had no real sort of media training to do this. Has anyone for example contacted the Media trust to see if they can offer training to our commentators?
We can do better, and it's little changes like this, for no additional cost, that can make it better. And before I get the "Oh you know so much, why don't you come and do it", I'm very happy to offer my services too. All you have to do is ask. If one doesn't ask, then one won't get, and you may find that within our ranks we have a few gems already.

I think the co-commentator is a superb suggestion. The best streams I've seen this season all seemed to have those. I also think some of our commentators might not realise that when they exchange little asides with the camera crew or other colleagues, the audience can't hear what's being said by the off-mic person, and it sometimes feels like the audience isn't being given their full attention. That could be easily fixed by the main commentator repeating for our benefit what his colleague has said. There, a suggestion for a tiny improvement that's free and simple

The co-commentator route may help Billy to get into the ground legitimately and so solve two issues raised on this forum. .

Why don't the media team do a little Q&A session if they are getting a lot of stick from people who don't understand the issues they face? That way they could help their audience understand why some things have to be the way they are (and thus hopefully reduce that criticism in the future), plus also perhaps receive and take on board some good suggestions for making things better or easier.
Just an idea. It wouldn't necessarily have to be a live session, it could just be on here or on Twitter with q's and a's copied across afterwards.

Mike Nicholson was guest co-commentator for our home game v Stockport last month and I thought did an excellent job of supporting and complementing the main commentator.

The co-commentator route may help Billy to get into the ground legitimately and so solve two issues raised on this forum. . I don't think a dinosaur like me would be much cop as a commentator.Although my South London accent would not preclude me as in days of yore, i try my hardest to avoid using Americanisms and would definitely never be able to talk in that slanty (AQI ?) speak so prevalent nowadays.I would also be unwilling to accept a list of buzzwords/phrases that must be used which is what seems to be happening (especially in Cricket) nowadays.I prefer my own phrases, such as........... What a load of bollocks Do me a favour He couldn't hit a cow's arse with a banjo It was much better in the old days Are any other jobs available ? I'm very good at making tea even if i say so myself, wouldn't have a problem picking a ticket out of a box after watching the match and would even consider donning a hi viz jacket to sit in the stand and watch the game with all the other essential people who have to be there. Rain has stopped play at The Oval by the way.....................
