Maybe the reason why the Supporters' Club wasn't mentioned in the behind the scenes update was because there were already plans to thank them in a different article. www.suttonunited.net/progress-update-1/All looks a bit silly now doesn't it

Having served on the Supporters' Club committee for 12 years, 6 as Secretary, I hope that I have as good an understanding and appreciation as almost anyone of the important part our Supporters' Club has played in the history of this club and will continue to play as we face exciting new challenges. Just to reiterate, the Supporters' Club very much still exists. However, in order to meet the demands of an expanding market and deliver the growth in turnover that we need it was felt that this could be best achieved by bringing the shop under the direct control of professional in-house resources.

I also heard that a box of the old 1998 centenary shirts were found a year or two ago and just thrown away. I actually found this quite upsetting for a number of reasons. Why would anyone do that? That doesn't make sense in any world. Sell them off cheap at least.

I'd have bought the whole box if I knew the alternative was binning them.

That's not really the point. People who would have really wanted one can't have one now.

Unfortunately commercialisation comes as part and parcel of being a league club, making money from every aspect of the club becomes more critical. As does removing old relics such as the Shoebox, that serve little purpose in this dog eat dog world. There is something sad in that, a lot of history has gone by those few concrete steps, but its time to move onwards and upwards. I am sure many on here will remember me moaning saying the club wasn't commercial enough when it came to its media and advertising etc, and urging the club to move forward. In the National league you can just about get away with the 'Old Ways' which I love and I know many on the board and the supporters do, but EFL football means that is impossible. I am over the moon that we will see our team play league football, I still can't quite believe it. A new chapter for this great club, but in doing so we have lost a little something, I guess we won't find a little old lady in a tea hut trying to serve 100 U's fans with just a kettle and and toasted sandwich maker in the EFL

It’s a difficult transition to being an EFL club and I really don’t think we were all prepared for, or necessarily wanted, everything that it brings with it. I’m hoping we don’t lose too much of what made us all love this club so much.

I'm sure I'm not the only one to feel a little ambivalent about what's happening. Yes, an exciting new chapter in the club's history is just beginning and it's uplifting to be experiencing that. But, almost inevitably, parts of the club are having to be sacrificed as we take the step up.
There will be some who thought that Sutton United were too traditional and set in the old ways to make the tough and time-critical decisions now demanded. Those individuals are being proved wrong. This is not quite a transformation, but it's certainly a major makeover. It's a bit of a wrench, but I've little doubt that we'll see the benefits once our debut season in the Football League gets underway.

That's not really the point. People who would have really wanted one can't have one now. I agree and I think it was a really stupid thing to do. Whoever did it must have had a reason.

Most likely lack of space - but at least ask if anyone is interested first!

A question about the Shoebox. Was there ever more of it i.e. a longer stretch of terrace? I find I have running medals dated 1958 and 1959 from Junior School sports held at GGL in the Summer. I remember the rounded ends and the wooden stand on the Collingwood side, but I have no recollection if the Shoebox was there.
