I'm doing a bit of a charity drive at the game today - I have some homemade puddings to give away to anyone who is willing/able to make a donation at royalmarsden.org/donate (and if you'd like to but can't afford to, come find me anyway if you're hungry). No cash donations please! I will be on the GGL end terrace more or less behind the goal. See you later!

Good to get back to winning ways - on a day when the top 3 all lost. Shame we couldn't keep a clean sheet and would have been nice to see Omar or Donovan back on the score sheet again. Second consecutive game without a yellow card.

First of all.Congratutions to all who have entered the Hall of Fame. A much better game and chances taken. Even though it was against the bottom club. W R scored a couple of well taken goals. J K scored another. The build up to all 3 was very good. The penalty was a sert. And well taken by R M. M of the M. either O B or W R.even though another all round showing of the team. Up next Rochdale and another 3 points. Hope none of the substitution's were injury related and just tactical.

First game I've managed to get to in a while... Nothing sort of game, all over once Sutton got the second goal I thought. Still yet to see Sutton lose too... Annoyingly my no goals conceded record has now gone though. 🥲🥲🥲

Will Randall is becoming a bit of a star…

A home game against the division's basement side creates its own sort of pressure, as most people expect you to win - but winning a football match is rarely straightforward. For the first 25 minutes Scunthorpe were the livelier side, carving out two or three decent openings, while we looked sluggish, with just the occasional raid down the wing offering hope. Then Omar surged into their box, was brought down by the byeline, and Rob Milsom coolly converted the resulting penalty. Within a couple more minutes Will Randall's long-range strike had put us 2-0 up, and the Iron had turned to rust. When you're down at the bottom, that's the way things tend to go (as some of us know from our own experience). Joe Kizzi applied the coup de grace before half-time, and it was effectively game over.
The second half produced a goal apiece, Will bagging his second after good work by Donovan Wilson, Harry then 'credited' with the own goal after a quick break from the visitors.
With the top three all losing today, and fourth-placed Exeter only drawing, we advance to 5th, closing up on the clubs above us. The points banked from all those draws earlier this month have actually helped give us a decent platform.

Up at Scunthorpe earlier in the season, I was chatting to one of their stewards and complementing his club on their ground. He told me there was plans to modernise it or even move to a new one. I said, Sutton would love to have a place like this. I suspect the Scunny fans would love a team like Sutton has at the moment. 319 of them made the trip, made some noise to start with (nobody else was) and you have to have some sympathy with them; another entrenched EFL club heading out of the league.
After some initial poor play from both sides treating the ball like it wasn't their friend, U's having to recover the ball a couple of times, Scunny just playing it harmlessly into touch, one of U's early brightest sparks, Omar B, won a penalty, Rob M thumped it in and the floodgates opened. Will R probably got away with a pull before placing a delicious shot across the turf with enough curl to find the bottom corner. The third was a great passing move that opened up a defence that was now chasing shadows and ended with an emphatic Kizzi netting. Both full backs on the score sheet.
A further two pieces of quality play opened up Scunny but David A had his shot saved while Omar B fired over thus missing the goal his performance so deserved. Eventually Will R made it four with another low shot that perhaps the 'keeper should have dealt with before U's scored a fifth at the wrong end after a rare break from the visitors.
If not at their best, U's were the dominant side after that opening goal. The FLP gave Omar B MotM and I wouldn't argue but Will R continued his fine form of recent weeks with another peach and a second to double his EFL tally for the season. The back four made some good interventions especially early on when U's were less than careful in possession. You can't complain at a 4-1 win that's for sure.
I think Sutton has played better and not won this season (against FGR recently for instance) but the difference was chances were made and this time taken plus the fact that FGR and Scunny are heading out of L2 in total different directions. The Iron's new manager maybe Keith Hill but he's not Jesus.
Of course we had a refereeing change and their no 9 can probably think himself fortunate that the change was required as I am not sure he would have lasted until h-t only not to appear for the second as Hill tried to shake up his team.
The new stand looks a decent addition to the VBS with more to come but another good stadium is heading for the NL unless Hill can perform more than just a minor miracle.
Rochdale up next and they have suddenly found some form. It will be a tougher assignment than yesterday but we owe them one after that last second defeat earlier in the season.

Long chat yesterday with Mick Mellows. I asked why our 2nd goal at Wembley was disallowed. Said he didn’t know then and doesn’t really know now. 8,9 and 10 from that final were at the match yesterday, not sure they would have looked out of place in their prime. Also watching was John Shears, who played in the 63 final. They all enjoyed the win yesterday.

In a busy week, I have squeezed out a blog post following a great win yesterday. I thought both teams were competitive for the first twenty minutes but the Sutton United pulled away as if in a fast car. Anyway the usual blog post with a video of that penalty, I have quite a collection, stuff on the match the new stand, all seater stadiums, drinking in the ground, why the universe keeps expanding (not this time) but if you have a moment give it a read. Here is a link to the blog post. shanepdillon.medium.com/in-front-of-a-new-grandstand-sutton-hit-four-past-a-beleaguered-scunthorpe-9da78ffc2749

I've been saying for a number of weeks now how Will Randall has been one of the best players on the pitch for us. And on Saturday that was evident in spades. The thing that really impresses me about him is his consistency. I'm aware a number of supporters were not impressed with him with a couple actually vocalising "thank god he's been substituted". I think they miss the point. Although he plays in an equivalent position to David A, that's pretty much where the comparison stops. On the surface he may not seem as exciting a plyer as David, but almost every game he has played there have been a couple of moments where I've just gone "wow". Just watch the touch he made to set himself up for his first goal on Saturday to see an example of what a talent he is. It's interesting to note that in league football, he's never scored for anyone but us (aside for Wolves U23) - and that includes stints at 4 of our league opponents this season - Swindon, FGR, Newport and Walsall.
In terms of the game, I agree it was pretty shabby until the penalty upon which Scunthorpe fell apart quicker than a jigsaw in the hands of a toddler. Mr Frake is totally correct in his assertion, and I went for a drink with a Scunny fan after the game (who has been a mate of mine for years) who is resigned to relegation because they have a chairman who is skint and has lost interest, they have a number of panic buys who are earning more than they should do and are not motivated to do the job (their No9 is an example of that) and there is general concern about their sustainability.
But as is always the case, you can only do a job against the side that is in front of you. Even though the scoreline suggested otherwise (I mean, come on we even had to score for them), I don't think that was as good as a performance as say Carlisle or Colchester away, but then it didn't need to be. It was all about not having a winless month and gearing us up for a stupidly tough month for us (tougher than December was) and will be the month that really can make or break our season.
7 wins I think will see us into the play offs. But with things so tight between 2nd and 8th there's a hell of a lot to play for. By the time we play at Wembley on 3rd April (wishful thinking perhaps!) I think our realistic opportunities will be realised.

Between now and the end of the season, we've got '6 pointers' against Swindon, Tranmere, Port Vale, Mansfield and Newport. The results in those games should obviously go a long way towards deciding our finishing position.
