I see Mansfield have decided to move the start times of their Home game to 1.00pm on 15th October to reduce expenditure on electricity for floodlights. Apparently 6 clubs in League 2 were canvased as a sample by research from Fair Game and it will be discussed by the EFL board next week. Mansfield are the only side thus far who have sought permission and done something. Can’t share the link which is in todays Daily Telegraph as it’s behind a paywall. I guess that as we have one of the smallest budgets - it’s something we would consider.

I have often wondered why referees insist on the lights being on all game when not needed.

Based on some of the refereeing performances we have witnessed I would have thought the reason was obvious

I have often wondered why referees insist on the lights being on all game when not needed. I guess it's a "just in case." To avoid complaints from clubs saying there wasn't enough light. You can never be quite sure when thick cloud might come over and obscure light. Not saying I agree just that this is probably why - having them on at the start would be preferable to having to switch on part way through because where do you draw the line - hard to define "too dark" when it happens gradually so you'd still get moans. The 1pm thing I can see why it seems more energy efficient but that's failing to look at the bigger picture beyond the club's own little bubble. It'd be really difficult for some away fans to get there for KO so more would probably opt to drive.

I would be quite happy for us to have early kick offs. I remember a particular game in 1989.

It sounds a good idea to bring forward kick off times as it will save on the electricity bill ( As we all know )

Sounds fine when we are at home but not so good when travelling away as a lot on here do.

Del,that's a good point. Reference to the supporters coach yes it would mean an even earlier start.

Yeah I was gonna say...some of us go to away games and work full time and have family commitments Not that I'd be against the idea. It's not about me after all!

It would be a moot point if the game is overcast and the ref says the floodlights need to go on, as is so often the case in the winter months.

I don't know the figures, but I'm sure that running Sutton United's floodlights for two hours is a lot less than people might think.
