I must agree with Andy K. We have run out of ideas.several posters have been saying that for a while. We play the same system / style week in week out with no change.Other clubs now know the way we play etc. I am hoping ,like others that there will be a big changes in tactics and squad next season. Saying that, I think we all will be looking forward to next season.

is4 - maybe next season, you might have some thoughts of your own, and not simply agree with everyone on this forum.

I agree that once we reached the "infamous" 50 points the wheels have come off. This is not a problem in itself as I believe that we need a few more seasons of consolidation in League 2 before we can even consider being promoted.
It is difficult to see quite what the reason has been as, despite the injuries and illness that we all know about, the team sheet has looked fairly similar each week in 2023 (including the Swindon/Doncaster purple patch- yes of course Easty is a factor).
In actual fact, the decline is most clearly highlighted by some poor defending in recent weeks as it has obviously been our solid defence this season (be it with Enzio right back, Kizzi centre back, BG out half the season and everything else they have had to deal with) that has kept us in the league, not unfortunately our goals scored.
Anyway, this is all just pre-amble to say, I just worry slightly about "momentum" going into the new season, I know that this is total "hokum" but hey, like us all, I'm a passionate supporter and I would buy every black cat and wear my lucky pants till worn through if I thought it would help Sutton win!
I have no doubts however that Matt (how fortunate are we to have him!) and his excellent management team will reset and sort in the close season and we will continue on this amazing adventure in 23/24

The back four is likely to be similar if not the same next year as we know they have signed new contracts. Winning the ball in midfield and keeping it reduces pressure on the back 4. Our midfield when we lose is often overrun.
if Lovett is the future in midfield, give him a run out for the next two games. Could Hart play in midfield for example? Now is the time to find out.
Maybe wrap Will Randall up in cotton wool and keep him somewhere safe until the end of his contract!

Oh dear. We were pretty good until we conceded but you could see the confidence just wilt when they equalised. Our defending was not up to the usual standard but end of season game with nothing to play for and it showed. Not sure what all the panic is about as anyone who watched the Northampton game would have seen that we still have a very competitive team.

In fairness it must be difficult to keep motivation and energy levels when there is seemingly nothing to play for and all credit to the team and management for getting us to a position where we had already secured our status with so many games to go.
However the team are now full time professionals and really need to keep going right to the end - the travelling fans deserve nothing less. It really is no excuse to talk about injuries - all squads in this league face that challenge. The reality is, as others have said, that our first XI appears good enough for Div 2 but our lack of strength in depth beyond that needs addressing.

is4 - maybe next season, you might have some thoughts of your own, and not simply agree with everyone on this forum. So is4 disagrees with someone and many gang up on him. Is4 agrees with someone and you get irate. Can’t win. Keep posting is4!

A few observations regarding injuries:
1. I don't know whether we've suffered more than other clubs in terms of the number & length of injuries but Matt might being a stats man. Whether our injuries have just been down to chance and bad luck, I guess it's difficult to know, but cup runs can't be blamed for injuries & tiredness this season. Maybe a review of our fitness and recovery programmes etc wouldn't go amiss.
2. We've signed a number of players who weren't fully fit at the time, perhaps through necessity rather than choice, given a presumably lower budget than other clubs.
3. Maybe some of our players, eg Randall, are simply just injury-prone.
4. Despite the injury situation in the autumn we managed to grind out results which we're failing to do now.
Plenty for Matt and the rest of the management team to ponder over the summer!

Not a lot to chose between Spurs and us really, at least we only lost by 4 and we scored first 🤫.

A disappointing result and end to the season. But I have no doubts that Matt will have us refreshed and a force to be reckoned with come next season. Wouldn’t even want to be Carlisle needing 3 points coming to ours last game of this one. Think we’ll be determined to go out on a high.
To be totally honest I expected runs like this not only in this division but the one below. It’s an unbelievable achievement that there is a lot of disappointment out there and that this is out of the ordinary as a league club. I think squad depth has certainly come into things and I guess it’s hard to build that with all the financial constraints and other costs. Perhaps at some stage consideration might be given to more rest to players for the Papa John’s given we’re likely to have less resources than others (though there are limitations due to squad rules), but the competition also can provide much needed prize money so it really is a hard balancing act. It’s a tough old season with 46 ultra physical league games as a starting point plus at least 5 cup matches.

What the recent results illustrate is the tight flipswitch between winning and losing in League Two. During December, January and February we only lost twice. In March and April, with much the same group of players, we've lost six times. That can be explained in part by us only playing three games against top-third sides during the winter, whereas since then we've played five. But also relevant are momentum and self-belief. Winning (or at least not losing) can become a habit. But once a team gets into a run of poor form, it may need a stroke of luck, or moment of inspiration, to break out of it. That's perhaps what we're waiting for. That, or a miraculously early recovery by our captain.
