I have been to many, many games where the programme was more interesting than the football

Makes me laugh. EFL clubs won't print because of costs etc but some clubs whose grounds aren't much up from a park pitch can.
Perhaps if the EFL weren't so apparently insistent that their adverts and their sponsors adverts have to appear in a printed programme, clubs could knock out an 8 pager for £2 or so. More fans might buy them at that price.
Surely they could judge with some accuracy the amount they're likely to sell and stick to it?
I personally think it's laziness and they can't be bothered to research sales levels properly let alone actually put in the effort to put a programme together. They just see how many are left over and look at the bottom line.
Another nail in the coffin of so called progress.

More fans might buy them at that price. To back up Mark's point, we've been advised we have to have six pages of League/Cup adverts for Carabao Cup matches. Seven if we're televised. The league games haven't been confirmed, but undoubtedly similar quantity. Many have pointed out Newport's 20-page effort. For what it's worth, with six pages of compulsory league adverts, a front and back cover, and say a dozen paid for club-sold adverts (to help with costs), that's twenty pages already!

I still don't think I've seen a definitive answer as to why we don't go totally online as we were in Covid - surely the cost would be slashed and you would get greater sales from away fans and a season subscription would be popular with fans. I'd pay £1.50 - £2 readily.
The best bit of the program for me is the performance stats where we can do how the Sutton players stack up. None of that is available to normal fans and to my mind we could have much more of it.

Not everyone has access to the internet. Some can't afford it others don't want it, perhaps don't trust it (can't blame them for that).
The digital only suggestion would exclude these people from obtaining a programme should they want one. A bit like the banks closing branches at rapid rates thus making it difficult for those not wanting to join the digital age.
Apparently there was not enough take up of the digital programme during Covid to sustain it as an option.
Perhaps demonstrating that the desire for a physical publication still exists even if dwindling. The paperback made a strong comeback after the initial release of the Kindle.
Digital is not for all.

If you offered a digital offering you could print less and reduce waste because the digital is available as a back up when you run out in match day, and then the digital offering could be made available especially for away fans via a QR code. There are a number who access abroad who would like a programme so they must have internet and a number of us who can't readily access Tuesday home games likewise we access IFollow. The number of people who come to matches without internet is very very small if at all - and they could perhaps be given priority to the printed copies ( they must be known to someone.) I am afraid the "don't have access to the internet" is an excuse which doesn't wash with me. Digital isn't for all but it is the choice for many and the most environmental option.

As I said before digital take up was low during Covid suggesting there isn't a great call for it.
Aah the environment. I doubt Sutton printing programmes will have much effect while USA, India,China,Russia etc keep pumping CO2 into the atmosphere
Gonna need a bit more international cooperation before we make any difference.

A printed programme is a physical record of the match. For those of us who are collectors, it's a much more satisfying record than its digital equivalent. There's something about it being tangible. It's why (to give one example) book collectors prefer printed books on their shelves to e-books on their tablets.

I just read that Crawley are not doing one next season. I have no idea how many league 2 clubs still print one and i did like the freebie at Colchester last season but i also understand some fans still like them as a record of the games they have been to.

I was pleased to see the printed programme return. It was sold out when I arrived at the ground 10 minutes before KO on Saturday - hopefully a good sign - so I purchased on-line.
As ever a very good read with the cover price now £3 (previously it was £4).
