Wycombe were already a good amateur side when we were elected into the Isthmian League in 1963. After we won the league in 1967 they signed Keith Blunt and Derek Gamblin and after we played Leeds in 1970 a few more of our star players went there:- Ted Powell, Larry Pritchard, Mick Mellows and a young Trever Waughman. I think Alan Gane might have gone there too. Wycombe then won the league three years in a row. They had a heck of a team - Gamblin, Powell and Pritchard were arguably the best in their positions in the whole of non-league football and they had other star players such as Keith Searle and John Delaney (who later joined us) - and a midfield player I thought was almost as good as Larry, Mickey Holifield.
Although they were not our local derby, the games against Wycombe were the ones I always looked forward to most:- - there was the rivalry around them taking our best players - they were the best team, the benchmark for others to match - they were easily the best-supported club in the league - regularly over 2,000 at Loakes Park
We continued to have good games against them through the 70s and 80s until they went into the Conference mid 80s, before we were promoted there as well. We beat them 5-1 on the way to the 1981 Trophy Final and, as mentioned above, they knocked us out in 1993. We also beat them in 1984's Hitachi Cup Final (Isthmian League Cup).
Wycombe's manager in the 70s was Brian Lee and when he joined the board of the Conference and held other positions of 'influence' he was always a good friend to this club - now sadly missed in the world of football.

I was there at the first leg and also saw them frequently when we were rivals in the Isthmian League. As Dave said they were always poaching our players.

Pretty sure Gamblin joined Leatherhead before signing for Wycombe.

I remember it well! It was also the day of the aborted Grand National and the all-Sheffield FA Cup semi-final.

I remember Derek Gamblin leaving Sutton to join Hendon but don't think he was there for long

Hoping we can take over 300 there. Decent prices, not too far to travel, the kids are still on holiday and it’s a very winnable game. No excuse really.

One would like to think so, but being the Tues directly after a bank holiday at a ground that isn't really close to public transport against a side that is only 1 division higher than us may impact on that. We should still have a decent following and hopefully those not driving will make the smart move and take the supporters coach, which really shouldn't take much longer than getting back by train (possibly quicker!)

Anyone know, before I hit the button, whether when you buy a ticket for collection it gives you option of at Wycombe or our club? I need to collect at Wycombe.
