One win (against 10 players) in our last 16 league games. No clean sheets in our last 13 league games - and we are understood to be looking to bring in another striker. On the bright side, we may not need to worry about where we are going to find the money for further ground improvements. My understanding was it was going to be a winger/s but I do share your concerns. I reckon 8 games usually provides a reasonable indication as to where a team will finish so we do need to start picking up points soon.

Wycombe game now looking like a nuisance. All about the league for me now. Really looking forward to it. Not sure I’m ready to turn my nose up at the League Cup because we’ve lost a couple of league matches. Long old season and we’ve got a reasonable sized squad, a few needing minutes. Hopefully we can give it a good go and hope we are well backed. . 4 league matches, in a row, conceding 9 goals. Cups are a luxury for me, all well and good getting to play Chelsea or Spurs, but not so good if you are relegated at the end of the season. I will be hoping the likes of Smith and Patrik don't pick up knocks. There is no doubt that the end of last season and the start of this season is relegation form.

There's always the chance of an upset which might kick-start a good run plus a possible glamour 3rd round tie.

I can't see any simple diagnosis or remedy. The team just isn't performing well enough over 90 minutes. Seven goals conceded and just one scored in three games tells its own story. This may turn out to be a mere early-season blip. Or it could extend into something more troubling.
I actually thought the midfield played quite well today. Craig Clay, a more than adequate replacement for the unfit Craig Eastmond, was a candidate for our man of the match. The wingers were lively, Omari Patrick bagging his third goal of the campaign. But our strikers struggled to find openings, and the defence suffered a late collapse. And this against a side that I can't see pulling up many trees this season.
Next Saturday's home match v Forest Green now looks like a big test. Before then there's the Carabao Cup tie against Wycombe, who won 2-1 away today.

I am afraid defending (or not defending) in that manner will ship too many goals for any side to avoid relegation. I think the 7 goals we have conceded over vs Barrow / AFCW and today have all come in the last 20mins of the match, 2 when we were 1 to the good. Kizzi / Goodliffe / Sowummi / Milsom are far to good to be defending in such a shambolic fashion, you have to wonder what part the system has to play in these capitulations? There was also a period last season when we were grabbing defeats from the jaws of victory with quick turnarounds.
Yes the Notts County game was excellent, but they were down to 10 and finding their feet, we seem to have lost ours.

I think Tuesdays cup game has come at the perfect time. We can play with a bit of freedom at Wycombe, and forget about our league form.
How many Sutton fan went today?

A lot of panic here. We were excellent against Notts County & Cambridge and will be again once Smith returns.Trouble is we have had no one to replace him. I revert to the point about having 8 forwards. To try and rescue the game we shuffle the back 4 and put the tallest player forward. It’s obvious we have at least 3 forwards that will never get a game. Same as last season we are paying players that are not good enough and will never play.

Wycombe game now looking like a nuisance. All about the league for me now. The Wycombe now looks like godsend! It will give Matt a chance to start Smith and Jackson and make other changes that can help him deal with this slow start to the season.

Hopefully said in jest, but if not you've really got to have a little faith.

One thing Newport did that we did not was get to the bye line to cross the ball. Crossing from in front of the penalty area means defenders are facing forward. From the byline they are facing their own goal. The classic example being Kizzi’s OG
We’ve dropped 22 league places in 21 days.

Last season we got into the habit of conceding last minute goals.
This season it seems like we're already starting to get into a habit of a 2nd half collapse. Barrow (albeit in difficult circumstances), AfC and now today.
And the worse thing about today and the 3 goals? They were playing into the wind. They had the disadvantage and we pretty well gifted them. I've got concerns about our back 5, ones which I mentioned last season. They've not gone away.
In more positive opinions, Clay was excellent today and I think Coley had a very solid game too.
Whether or not one cares about progress in the cup, I think that's the perfect gate at the perfect point. A real opportunity to reset.

The all important first goal really wasn’t that crucial yesterday and Rose stopped it being 4 or 5.
I would rest Eastmond and Smith Tuesday and possibly Kashkett but play John for a half. Hart definitely needs game time and Milsom needs a rest.
Points at the moment are far more important than a cup win.

Easty out for another 10 days at least as per Matt's post match interview. So enforced rest. Smith not played for three weeks and needs game time. We have played 5 games not 35.
