Really enjoyed that. Epsom’s keeper made some good saves but as the game went on our lads seemed to grow in confidence and played some nice stuff. Brad House saved a penalty but we went behind from the corner but hit back with two well worked goals.

Very encouraging performance from the young Sutton side (with a senior colleague between the sticks). They played some lovely, fluid football, the pace of full back (and captain) Cameron Sullivan and trickery of winger Khyan Edwards a threat down the left, while Jack Phillips on the other flank also caught the eye. Up front, Joden Trickett gradually grew into the game.
Epsom & Ewell were a side of limited ability, and their keeper was much the busier of the two, so it was something of a surprise when they took the lead just after Brad House had saved the penalty. Substitute George Vorster then emerged as the saviour, taking us into the next round with a brace of neatly-taken goals.

TBC - there are still 12x 2nd Round ties still to be played (most ties being played w/c 27th November by the looks of things) and the first round was only completed tonight! Leatherhead, Redhill, Sutton United and Virginia Water are the only confirmed sides through to the 3rd Round at present

I'll just add that last night's game had an 'old school' feel to it, with the Sutton supporters in attendance mostly those who followed the club during the Isthmian League days of the last century. 'Twas a pleasing break from the intensity of the EFL fixtures.
One aspect that wasn't 'old school' was Cobham's 3G pitch. It's noteworthy that a club at Step 5 of the non-League pyramid, albeit one in an affluent part of Surrey, has managed to install one. No doubt it's now providing community benefits, and Epsom & Ewell will be paying to play their home matches there.

I noticed that the pitch was also installed by Slatters

A club very much on an upward trajectory.

I don’t remember there being a 1st round match. We received an automatic bye to the second round - 35 teams entered the competition, so to get to 32 teams there were three 1st Round ties required to be drawn from Step 4 & 5 clubs with the remainder of the clubs receiving byes. In previous seasons, the round of 32 teams has been called 1st Round with the ties in previous round shown as Preliminary Round but this season Surrey FA are showing the rounds drawn as 1st Round, 2nd Round, 3rd Round, Quarter-Finals ......

While not wishing to be critical of my former work colleagues at SCFA, they and those before them have forever messed around with the competition's structure.
In the old days the qualifying rounds used to outnumber the competition proper.
They're not alone though ad the FATrophy has been messed with in similar fashion too.

Interesting to see that they were wearing the academy team's kit and not the first team's.

I would have expected that, since it's run as an academy fixture now

And the shirt sizes might be somewhat different!

I would have expected that, since it's run as an academy fixture now I know we're basically putting out an academy team but I thought that technically it's a first team fixture.
