That is correct Taz. As you're the olny Sutton fan that reads the Express I thought I would post the article on the forum.

That is correct Taz. As you're the olny Sutton fan that reads the Express I thought I would post the article on the forum. How dare you sir!! I would like to catagorically deny that I am a Daily Express reader! As previously stated, my old dear still buys it as her dad used to print the thing up in Manchester. I read no other pages apart from the one about Mr Hanlan. So my concience is clear!

A few of us watched the dvd of the Coventry game on the evening of the 7th. This was the first time I'd seen the footage since the tenth anniversary.
Two things struck me about the match that were at odds with my previous impressions.
1. The quality of football (from both sides!) was actually quite poor - though, admittedly, the state of the pitch didn't exactly help! The play was mostly scrappy and disjointed, with little in the way of flowing football - a notable exception being the build-up to Coventry's equaliser. This drove home to me how much the standard of football has improved over the last twenty years, both at the top level of English football and the top level of the non-League game. I suspect that the Coventry team from 1989 would have struggled in today's Championship.
2. My recollection was that Sutton's goal was under almost continuous siege for the last fifteen minutes - but it wasn't like that. True, in the game's final quarter Coventry had about seven presentable opportunities to score a second equaliser. But we also had attacks in the latter stages, with Lenny Dennis and Micky Stephens both passing up decent chances to score a third for Sutton.

Picking up on Cheshire's comment about United not giving any free kicks away in the last 32 minutes, at was actually the whole of the second half! Which begs the question, has this ever been achieved at that level before? Very difficult to prove I know, but I expect the answer is 'no', and therefore another thing to admire our club for.

Something else i noticed from watching the whole game at Mark's little 20th anniversary get together (although he does it every year!) was that nearly all of our corners were rubbish except, obviously, the two we scored from. I can see why we never got those corner moves right on the morning of the game! Also if anybody ever gets bored near a set of goal posts, try and recreate the Coventry post and crossbar miss as you'll be there all day. Incredible miss. Interesting to note too that John Motson has been a useless, senile old nutcase for at least twenty years. Nice to see the police horses too since my parents always like to remind me that they were what i really wanted to see that day (aged one and a half i must add!)

Have only watched the whole game once since the day. When OS first produced the DVD's, we used a pre-release copy to test out the then brand new DVD\TV setup in the bar one thursday night.
Watching those last 15 minutes again, it felt Cov were going to equalise, even though I knew full well they didn't!
Also, a certain Mr Hanlan was actually there that evening when the team came in after training. Soon after the second goal, he misses a decent chance to make it 3-1.
We all naturally turned to take the mickey out of him for it, only to find him sat at the bar shaking his head, already copping it from JR & TR! ;D

The short corner move worked again a week later at Telford. You could hear their fans muttering "how come our manager is the only person in the country who doesn't know they do that ?" Throughout Barrie's time as manager we repeatedly made good use of the near post corner to either of the Golley brothers with JR, Macca or Lennie looking for the flick-on. Without Mark and JR by the time we played Coventry we went for more variation. We might have expected Coventry to defend better against corners with a centre-half like Kilcline but looking at the game again he was on the line for our first goal and actually made a poor effort to keep the ball out. I remember our stewards saying how many half empty brandy bottles were in the Coventry changing room after half-time.

My main memory is being rather pleased with myself that I could name all the players whenever any 'first-time visitors' asked. Well in fact I probably offered up their names whether asked or not! I also remember being slightly miffed at a couple of school friends that had got in for nothing by scaling a garden fence but I think that 'Amber' and I were more concerned as to whether or not we were in a good place to get on TV, eagerly awaiting the highlights to see if we had been successful

The goal was at an away game, so Pressec is probably right (as usual !)

Factually incorrect Mr Bot...our first game after Coventry was a 1-0 victory over a Mickey Droy led Kingstonian in the FA Trophy. If I remember there were a lot of people there because we were selling Norwich Tickets that day... I'll get my coat (And some industrial de-icer for Wembley's pitch if it will help!)

Darn it Andy you just beat me to that revelation. What a game that was after the Lord Mayor's Show. Mickey Droy was immense or was that obese? ;D

There were over 1000 there at that K's game. Nothing to do with getting hold of Norwich tickets of course!
A pretty awful game if I recall. Lenny firing in from close range in the last minute to win the tie.
