Leeds played their first team, like all clubs did in the past. What side would Man Utd put on the pitch if they played a non-league side  I was at the match............. to be honest I don't remember any of the game  |

Thanks an really excellent article. It seems like only yesterday. I can still remember seeing Terry Cooper going down the wing in the first minute and thinking that it could be a long old game.  It was - but still memorable.  |

A great read.It prompted me to dig out my old Sutton and Cheam Heralds from JAN 1970.The memories came flooding back as i read about the Hillingdon match and the build up to Leeds.Carshalton put back their game to Friday evening to avoid clashing with Sutton v Leeds(very decent of them)and Sutton Council helped increase the capacity to 14000.We also tried to have the game shown at the Granada Cinema via closed circut TV but the FA would not agree.
Fans Queued all night for tickets except the lucky Supporters Club Members who had their own small Q with guaranteed tickets.Luckily this Q was not too long as i was ill in bed with Flu and had sent my Mum to get my tickets which were like Gold Dust.I took a girl from work with my second ticket and she was ever so grateful!
Finally a question to you all (except Frakey who knows everything)What was SUFC highest home attendance prior to Leeds?Who were the opponents?What was the competition and in what year?
Sorry !More than one question got carried away.No prize but abit of fun to brighten up these Football free Weeks!

Can't resist Wellie but actually Im not sure. I know both the Hillingdon match & an FAC tie against T&M in the 50's pulled close to 8,000.
I don't think the Aldershot match in 1963 was as good. Possibly the Arsenal friendly to "turn on" the new lights?

The 57/8 final was held at Wimbledon and drew a gate of around 7,000.
Wellie, I'm really stumped. TBH, gates back past the late 80's were not regularly recorded and so I didn't take much notice. Was it that Aldershot game then or was it an AC tie in the 60's?

It was indeed a London Senior Cup game in 1956 v Tooting and Mitcham crowd was 8500.I have this confirmed in my copy of the Sutton and Cheam Herald dated Thursday 22nd January 1970 where they commented that this figure would be broken at the Leeds match.This paper is a fantastic read and i will pose some more questions at a later date if anyone would be interested.

Sorry, that is factually incorrect. We did not play T&M in a LSC tie during 1956, however, it was probably the AC 3rd rnd replay in Feb 56. We lost 3-0.
I knew it was against T&M just got the wrong match.

The Local Rag must have got it wrong then even though the article was on their front page!
I am sure you are 100% correct as ever.8500 for a local derby it just seems incredible compared to today.How times and football have changed.

The Amateur Cup was a huge crowd puller back then & in the 1960's. Plus the local derby factor.
There was probably not much else do on a Sat afternoon either!

Not sure but didnt we enter both at one time?I am sure Frakey will know.
The London Senior used to be quite interesting with many top proffesional sides entering a"Reserve Team"I remember we were once drawn away to West Ham at Upton Park.In the ground their line up was confirmed and we were amazed to see several first team players starting.Two of them who were in dispute with the club at the time were none other than World Cup Winners Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters.If i remember we lost 2-1 on a most memorable night!
