Kicking off at the same time as England... the reserves lost 6-1.

Could've been worse, the Faroe Islands lost 6-0 at home to France. I'm a Faroese chap at heart and that result has really upset me.

They're probably sh*t hot at stepping up very breifly and falling very abruptly down into the Ryman One South though

Rob, Phil's gone, so have his players - move on, like they have. It's done & dusted.

Basingstoke apparently had a couple of first teamers and Sutton were slightly weakened with a couple of players having moved up into the first team squad in the last week. 'Stoke are always a strong Suburban side, and deserved their win - we didn't play well, they did.

My mentality can be somewhat childish but it stems from boredom at the constant chatter about the mighty reserve players of yesteryear who have pretty consistently made into the first team for a chance and then either held the place or lost it and dropped down.
It's the natural balance of things. Football can be horribly cruel on young players but you tend to end up at your level.

And best wishes to Tony Martin - who did his knee again. Their physio fears it's a frayed meniscus which could well mean an operation and no more football this year, and maybe this season. What's a meniscus? www.orthoassociates.com/meniscus.htm

FYI Take a look at the team sheet for Basingstoke yesterday and you will find only ONE player who has previously played for other Basingstoke reserve teams this year. Basingstoke 1st team did not have a fixture yesterday! Basingstoke refused to move KO time so as to accomadate 1st team players. With a near full Conference team against younger less experienced players it was always going to be tough. If you were at the game you would now!

Actually Ben Townsend was the only player in our team who has held a regular place in the league side, and he was coming back from a lengthy injury.

I don't think their squad was packed with first-teamers - the kick off was not moved as many of their players work in the morning. Their squad was better than ours.

Being old and infirm and unable to travel, I watch a lot of Suburban League football and last year 'Stoke were by far the best team in the division. Maybe not quite so this time but still hard to beat and you also have a team in transition - its not always about winning, that's why I like that league, it's about spotting talent and encouraging it. And beer of course.

I can't say it? Can I? Surely not? VotP is right... but, I'd say Basingstoke have been strong, not necessarily "by far the best". They're a good Suburban side and always challenge for the title and honours - whether that's a benefit for their first team with supporting and nurturing players I can't say as I've no idea how many have progressed.
And please don't encourage a debate about spotting talent VotP - you'll get us into all sorts of trouble.
