What I find frustrating is when people (on here and elsewhere) say they don't sing/chant/join in themselves but they think it's a pity other people don't as much as they would like. If you want something to happen that must necessarily be a team effort, then be a part of it. It's a bit like saying it's a shame a particular charity don't have enough income to help people do XYZ, but not giving anything to said charity yourself. You've absolutely no obligation to join in, but it strikes me as odd to say "we" aren't doing much when you don't or can't help to do it yourself. It's not as if creating an atmosphere is the job of one particular group of fans and if everyone else sits back and watches they should still expect said atmosphere to materialise.
I don't mean you OS or people in similar situations, just those who say we "should" be making more noise but apparently think that is certain people's permanent job. Like I said, nobody has to join in, but if you don't, having a go at particular people you have (for whatever reason) decided SHOULD be doing it isn't fair.
I used to start a lot of songs and chants back in the day, but now my friends are all adults I find that people usually don't join in. I know that's nothing personal: presumably it's because they are nearly all male and find I'm starting in the wrong octave for them! I always join in when I can, though. And I shall make the effort to start more stuff off because a couple of chants that are shouted rather than sung wouldn't be messed up by me starting them.
I'm a bit confused as to what the swearing thing has to do with it, though. Forgive me if I'm missing something obvious but what do the anti-swear brigade have to do with whether we sing or not? Our songs don't tend to contain naughty words. Personally I have no problem at all with swearing (unless it crosses the line into abuse of particular individuals or groups) and do far too much of it myself, but I'm not put off being vocal by people saying it's offensive. Just try not to say Certain Things at volume out of respect for others around me (I've perfected the art of losing my rag very quietly sometime during the last 18 years I've been following Sutton). That shouldn't get in the way of being shouty/singy/etc should it?
