On the BBC Sport website today:
Jamie Vardy: League clubs 'must take chance' on non-league gems.
English non-league football is full of "gems" who could make the grade at the top level - but not enough clubs are brave enough to take a chance on them.
Do we have any such gems?

The non-league game is scoured by scouts week in week out, if a player is good enough at our level they will get their chance. Attitude as well as ability plays a huge part in if a player with potential makes it or not. We have seen many who who have the ability but not the attitude (not mentioning names). Smalling played for Maidstone before joining Man Utd. Nick Bailey was spotted at a young age and has played at every level bar one. Of course there was Efan Ekoku who turned up one night to training with his boots in hand asking for a trial with us, going on to be the 1st player to score 4 in a premiership match. Do we have any such gems at the moment

Watch Tom Bolarinwa make the Football League in the next few years. I'm confident How old is he? I thought he was in his mid twenties.

He is. But so was Jamie Vardy when he left non-league football...

I'm not sure why a lot of people think Tom is so good. Sure he's quick and has ability to get past defenders however his final ball is often woeful (Aldershot in the first half for example) and he makes bad decisions for his final ball. He also doesn't shoot when he has the opportunity. Don't get me wrong I'd rather have him in our team than not but at the moment he's a long way off League football

The good thing about that though is that a lot of the parts missing from his game are things that can be learned. Dos certainly implied that Tom is a "work in progress" when he signed him, but the more experience he gets the better he will become. But I do think he could be a Football League player, which remember is only 2 divisions above us. The point that Vardy is making is those playing at the TOP level. Smalling went from Maidstone to Middlesborough and Fulham before getting to United, DJ Campbell bounced around the Championship before playing Premier League football and of course Stefan Payne was signed when Fulham were a premier league club, failed to make an appearance and returned to us a shadow of a player he was before he left. I could rattle off a whole list of players in the Dos era who have come from much higher, albeit some at the tail end of their careers. David Hughes and Paul Telfer being the obvious ones, but then we sometimes forget that players more recently like Michael Spillaine and Shaun Cooper both have experience of playing at Championship level. I could be wrong, but I think only Dundo, Tommy Wright and Tom out of our regular players are playing at the highest level they've played at. The rest of the squad have at least played at National level, and many have played in the league.

It will be a long time before our "academy" produce any gems that is for sure. Even for our level of football let alone league football.
Only player in our squad who I think could stand any realistic chance of playing league football is Eastmond IMO.
Obviously he has fallen through the levels to end up here but if he applies himself and continues to put in good performances he should be able to make it back to league football.

If Tom had all that he would probably be a premiership player let alone a league one?

TB looks to be our only forward who could turn a match a match for us, hence he will always get game time. If tested at higher level I think he would still perform but improve his overall game more rapidly

If tested at higher level I think he would still perform but improve his overall game more rapidly I was thinking of Bolasie and Zaha when I was writing my post. At the moment he's making wrong decisions however I'm sure that will change and he's learning all the time. He's obviously not alone there! I'm sure, as another supporter said to me on Saturday, that we will wallop a side this season. We do have a quality team. In the past I haven't looked forward to some games but this season I can't wait for Saturday to arrive. Anyway there are plenty of non-league gems but unfortunately many League clubs don't want to take the risk. Us older ones can remember the likes of Stuart Pearce, Vinnie Jones and Stan Collymore in the opposing team and like Efan they went on to play for their country.

Theo Walcott is fast with good feet and terrible at crossing too. Mind you Arsenal do tend to drill any crossing ability out of their players!

It would be nice to wallop somebody for six. I can't remember the last time we did that in a league game.
