Rumour on twitter he's left the club. No more details. If so, then a HUGE thank you - You've had some cracking moments for us, been a rock in defence and who can forget your emergency stint in goal!!

A wonderful servant. I thought that he was leaving at the end of the previous season but he stayed on to help whenever needed.

I hold my hands up! ‘Twas me. It’s no rumour. I messaged Simon on Twitter that I thought only he could see as it’s a locked account. I was obviously wrong on that score cos it was seen publicly. Apologies to Simon. But as he confirmed his leaving, I don’t want speculation to drag on. Personally I hope he might turn out for Bath or Chippenham. Just sorry we didn’t get the chance to thank him for his time at Sutton. Will never forget his time in goal v Torquay and how infuriated their fans were that they couldn’t beat us with him in goal! Top man! All the best Si.

Yes its a long way for Simon to come and not to play regularly. Obviously not privy to the arrangement Dos had with him so difficult to comment further. Anyway good luck to Simon and thanks for your fantastic efforts here.

Certainly haven’t seen many, if any, better defenders in all my years down at Sutton. Top top quality and was a privilege to see him play for us so many times.

Wish you all the best. The legs have finally caught up with you, but hope it works out for you elsewhere.
One of the best defenders ever to wear the shirt, and over so many seasons too.

He had a particularly memorable week in February last year, expertly tackling Alexis Sanchez in the Arsenal Cup tie then donning the keeper's gloves at Torquay after an injury to Ross Worner. Before that there were so many unflustered appearances in Sutton's back line, and the occasional goal as well.

Like Dundo, SD become part of the furniture under Dos. He was there for both the league titles won and of course the FA Cup run in which he was truly outstanding and kept going even when the legs were telling him no to.
Almost 280 apps for one club is a significant contribution these days, another loyal servant.
Let's hope his ankle clears enough for him to play at a decent level again. Cheers Simon.

Top player Simon. Pretty sure he made his debut at full-back in an evening game against Dover - who included a certain Alan Pouton that night too - and looked like he'd been there for years. Pace, power and an excellent positional sense made him a joy to watch. A class apart really.
Just a shame none of us sang his name to the tune of Kumbaya My Lord, rather like Brighton used to sing to Steve Foster:
"Si Down-ah my Lord, Si Down-ah, Si Down-ah my Lord, Si Down-ah, Si Down-ah my Lord, Si Down-ah, Oh Lord, Si Down-ah...."

Simon "Quality" Downer will be sadly missed by the Clacker Club.
Dos bought Simon to Sutton Utd on a short term basis and I think he joked with Dos " you can't afford to sign me on permeant basis".
Well fortunately for us Dos did later sign Simon and the rest is history.
Simon was our anchor man and his reading of the game, positional awareness was second to none!
We all send you and your family Simon our best wishes for the future.

Downer vs Leeds United was one of the greatest centre half displays I've seen down GGL.
Made it look like a pipe and slippers job.
