Here we are then already at the midway stage of the National League season where this weekend we welcome a strong Solihull Moors side to GGL after two away matches. Solihull come into this game on the back of 7 consecutive clean sheets and recorded an impressive 2-0 win over Harrogate on Tuesday night.
I’m hoping we can build on our excellent point at Fylde last weekend but see this as being a very tough game for our lads - hopefully Moors are distracted by their FA Cup pursuits.
Come on the U’s!

From the Solihull web site: linkHere’s your full match preview ahead of the clash at Gander Green Lane… FormOur hosts sit just outside the play-off places on goal difference, but are on a six-game winless run. They were beaten 1-0 by Maidenhead United in their last home fixture, but picked up a credible 2-2 draw at Fylde last weekend. Tim Flowers’ men are currently on a 10-game unbeaten run and haven’t conceded a goal in their previous seven. They collected a vital three points at home against Harrogate Town on Tuesday evening, which leaves them joint third in the table. In the opposite dugoutPaul Doswell – the 52-year-old is the longest serving manager in the top five divisions of English football. He was appointed in May 2008 and guided the side to the play-offs in his first two seasons, before guiding them to the Ryman League title in 2011. He repeated that success in the National League South in 2015/16. Doswell oversaw the club’s run to the fifth round of the FA Cup in 2017 and led them to the third-placed finish in the National League last season, before they eventually lost out to Boreham Wood in the semi-final. Opposition key man Craig Eastmond – the midfielder has been a key component in the Sutton starting 11 this season, having made 20 league appearances and netted five league goals – that makes him their top scorer in this current campaign. A quote from the assistant managerGary Whild: “You can see the lads are confident now, they’ve got a little spring in their step which is only right with the run they’re on. “Sutton will be very tough and we’ll have to get towards the sort of standard we were on Tuesday to get anything down there.” The last time the two sides metMoors and Sutton played out an entertaining 2-2 draw at the ATG Stadium back in August. Flowers’ men twice fought back from behind to earn a point thanks to goals from Danny Wright and Kyle Storer. Did you know? There is a club in The Gambia called Sutton United FC. In July 1999, Young Stars FC was formed by Father Andrew Cole and the team originally consisted of people going to Bible classes. The team was later renamed Sanchaba United, which means ‘Downtown’ in the Mandinka language until an English visitor, known only as Walter, donated equipment to the club and suggested they change their name to Sutton United FC. The club, which is located in Lamin Village on the outskirts of Banjul, plays in the third tier of Gambian football known as Nawettan.

I don't think the bookies will make us favourites for this one, but U's do better this year against sides who fancy their chances and attack. Sutton are better on the counter attack, we have not been good at unpicking 8 or 9 man defences. Rumour has it Flowers can dip his hands into the Bluenoses' parts bin - and has fashioned a meaner defence than Monk has.

I am really looking forward to seeing Ezra Ikebuasi play for the first team. He impressed me in a strong SSC line-up and I thought he could make the step up. It is a silver lining that tighter finances this year means we are less able to cover injuries by purchases or loans, so that is creating more chances for our academy players.
While on silver linings, great news that Man City have invited the disappointed youth cup lads to visit their academy and play a game. Real sportsmanship.

Watched Solihull vs Blackpool, and they do look very reasonable, like to play on the break, and of course just 1 replay at Blackpool away from doing Playing Arsenal at home in the 3rd Round.
Tough match, we will find out a bit about ourselves...

Yes they are reasonable and quite physical but i wouldn't put them in the same category as Leyton Orient or Salford both of whom we have beaten.

Cracking first half from Sutton, to progress we need to turn it into goals!

I thought we played well with ball to feet and had most of the possession first half with the aid of a following wind. Unfortunately a break away goal from Solihull and many fine saves from their keeper enabled them to take the lead. We quickly hit back to level and probably deserved more from our efforts but went in level at half time.
Second half they had the wind and a long throw specialist and we succumbed to the pressure they put on us. However their second goal spurred us on and a cracking free kick from Kenny Davis saw us draw level and continue to press for a winner. It wasn't to be but there were a lot of positives to be taken from todays game one of them being how well Brandon is settling in.

Well, we remain undefeated against the other top ten sides. On the downside, we haven't won in seven games. A draw was about right today. Our defending wasn't great for either Solihull goal, but great to see Wayne Brown get his first Sutton goal (the first Solihull have conceded since October) and that free kick from Kenny D for the second equaliser was sublime (reminiscent of the one he put past Halifax on 1 September).

Very impressed with the lads today, full of movement and intensity and 2/3 up at half time wouldn't have flattered us. But solihull are a very hard team to beat and it was no surprise they were much improved after the break.
Only real negative was a lack of decisiveness at the back with both goals very avoidable, but Pearce will have learned an awful lot today and his physical presence will improve quickly at his age. Looks very good on the ball. Also miffed as to why clear MOTM Asante was subbed off, he was superb and still full of running, a real joy to watch.
Linesmen were both terrible, solihull were routinely stealing 10 or more yards from every throw down our right, and with a guy who can throw 40 odd that makes a big difference. Solihull clearly happy to cheat to win, their number 10 was a disgrace
