Sutton United vs Margate: Match Preview
This week, Margate return to league action when they travel to Surrey to take on league leaders Sutton United.
Unbeaten in the league, the U’s have only dropped two points so far this season; on the opening day away at newly promoted Concord Rangers while at home, Sutton have conceded just one goal. But, the U’s were surprisingly beaten in the FA Cup at home by lower league Alton Town.
Defenders Simon Downer and Jason Goodliffe, strikers Craig Dundas and Steve Watts are all trying to shake of injuries for Margate’s visit, although they do at least have time on their side, having not played since the 2-1 home win over Harrow Borough, a week and a half ago.
Former Carshalton Athletic striker Richard Jolly – signed in the summer – should start and is the U’s top scorer with five goals in seven league games.

It’s the middle of a busy period for the Blues. By the time Gate have played Ware or Whitehawk in the FA Trophy on Saturday 16th October, they would have played nine games in 28 days. This game against Sutton United represents match number five of nine.
After starting the season without a win in their opening four league games, Margate’s new side have started to find their feet and have subsequently won three Ryman matches on the spin, conceding just one goal away at Folkestone. A win against the U’s in their backyard could send Gate into the play-off places for the first time this season and the first time since the 2007/08 season.
Injuries will doubtless play a part in manager Iain O’Connell’s selection with Craig Cloke, Ishmail Kamara and James Pinnock all doubts for the trip to Sutton. Tommy Osborne - who battled through illness to play the full 120 minutes of Gate’s FA Cup defeat at Kingstonian – could be fit to start while new signing James Rogers looks set to make his debut, either on the left or in central midfield. Midfielder Darren Marsden should also return to the squad.
