Sorry, but did OS actually compare Sami Nasri to George Best?? WTF? You just trying to take what I said out of context! Roger Bannister would only be considered as a decent athlete today, but that does not make his achievement any less great. The Wright Brothers would not do that well in today's commercial flight industry, but the point is that these people got up one morning and raised the bar. They did something nobody had done before, and its that which makes them great. As with Best, he raised that bar and was the 'best' of his time and that of what had gone before. For me to compare Best with Nasri (who I think is a very similar player) is a complement to Best. Here I am 40yrs after he played comparing a excellent player with him and saying they are about the same. There are not many things you can compare 40yrs on and argue which is still better, ( car, aircraft, ship, sport, etc). I am saying Best had ability 40yrs ahead of its time and that is what makes him a legend, the longer those comparisons go on the greater a legend he will be.

It's harder to be a great player nowadays mainly because of the way the game is now played. If ,for instance , you are someone with the ability to run at players and take them on and make things happen , you are now up against ten men , or even all eleven ,strung out across the penalty box.
The vast majority of teams are content to sit back and play for a 0 - 0 draw. The ball is going sideways and backwards 90% of the time.
Watch the first goalkick in the next Sutton game.20 players will be clustered together on the halfway line to the side of the pitch. What can you do if it drops to you there ? Even Giles and Hoddle would struggle.
For anyone under the delusion that George Best was only around for a couple of years these are his first team (without numerous friendlies) stats for United.
Games 470 Goals 179

George Best played on worse pitches than most of you have seen in nightmares. He could glide over drying cement or quicksand. ;D

I would have liked to see Best play at Beddington Park! His career might not have lasted as long as it did!

I do think OS has a point but it's difficult to compare.
You know people complain that there are too many foreign players in the Premier League and we will not win the World Cup while this is the case. I say that we haven't won it for 44 years and in the 70's we hardly ever had any overseas players yet didn't qualify for World Cups. Therefore the theory that there are too many overseas players is of course complete nonsense.
The cream will always rise to the top and if the English players are better than the foreigners then they will play. It's also cheaper for the clubs to employ them so there is an incentive to play them if they're good enough.
I'm rambling on and of course the alcohol has had no effect whatsoever! Hic!!

I suppose some bright spark will tell us next that Bradman couldn't get into this Aussie team that were knocked over for 98.
