I was looking at our positive first half of the season and noted that compared to footie at the higher levels we play in a lot of cup competitions. 4 per season if you count FAC, FAT, League Cup and County cup. When you compare our situation with that of Man Utd, Chelsea, etc. they play in 3 cups per season (2 if they engineer a strategic failure in the league cup with some kids sometime around September!!) With 4 more league games in the ILP (to be completed no later than 30 April) and the far greater danger of bad weather causing fixture congestion (as we do not have the luxury of posh undersoil heating and clever drainage) it seems that this adds significant additional pressure to the system. Our squad is not F/T is it? Should we be forced to play in 4 cup competitions? Would 3 work? I know that the FAT/FAC could be big revenue generators if the club progresses but in reality is the League cup worth anything to us? What is the counter argument?

When I started watching Sutton there were even more cups to worry about. No league cup then but the London Senior Cup. London Charity Cup, London Challenge Cup and South Thames Cup were regulars in our calendar. There was also the Premier Midweek Floodlit League but I don't recall us entering that.
I'm not sure whether there are too many cup games, after all most players would rather play than train and players used to cope fine. BUT, the pitch would appreciate fewer games on it and with so much televised football these days the league cup in particular serves no real purpose (in my opinion) and every round played costs clubs money as the gates don't cover travel costs.

Our manager has already made clear that he doesn't have much regard for the two 'minor' cup competitions (at least in seasons when we have a serious ambition to get promoted). In the League Cup and SSC he'll put out a mixture of reserve team players and first teamers in need of match practice. (Expect to see more of that at Molesey on Monday.) This relieves the pressure on the first team squad.
This is a bit like the approach taken by the bigger Premier League teams to the early (and sometimes later) rounds of the Carling Cup!
