United's home form key to Premier League title
Sutton United boss Paul Doswell admits his side’s sparkling home form over the run in will be key to its Ryman League Premier Division title hopes.
United smashed visitors Maidstone United 5-1 on Saturday through goals from Darren Ebsworth, Richard Jolly (2), Leroy Griffiths and Bradley Woods-Garness.
Doswell’s men have secured 40 points from a possible 48 at Gander Green Lane this term to see them ten points clear at the top of the table.
And the manager believes extending that run to the end of the campaign will see his side celebrating a first league crown since 1999.
“To win 12 of 16 home games and draw the others is title winning form in anyone’s book,” he said.
“If we can keep that form going until the end of the season then we will win the league.
“We can see the finishing line. I think it is between four teams now and some of the others have easier run-ins so it is going to interesting.
“What we keep drumming in to the squad is that it is very rare for senior players to get the chance to win medals at any level.
“They have a great opportunity to do just that.”
Full-back Ebsworth got the ball rolling at the weekend with a free-kick right out of the top draw and Doswell believes the former Millwall youngster could soon earn a ticket back to the big time.
“If David Beckham had scored that goal they would be playing it over and over again. It was just a wonderful goal,” he added.
“Darren deserves a lot of credit. He has come out of the pro game and if he keeps on going as he has been, he has a real chance of getting back in.”
Jolly’s brace put him on top of the Ryman Premier League goalscoring charts on 18 goals, until Kingstonian’s Bobby Traynor levelled matters on Monday night.
But Doswell admits he is not certain to start against former club Wealdstone this Saturday, where he smashed 10 goals in a month-long loan earlier this year.
“If Richard was at any other club he’d probably be starting every week,” said the manager.
“We’ve got Andy Forbes coming back from suspension and Craig Dundas is undroppable, while Leroy Griffiths and Bradley-Woods Garness are scoring goals.
“So we’ve got four players in those positions looking start. It is a difficult one for Richard because he has been at Wealdstone, so we’ll have to make a call on that.”
