I'm just thinking aloud outside the box.....
I am a Sutton Utd fan myself but, even in the light of the club's brilliant promotion this season, we are still not in the Football League after 113 years trying (assuming this is our aim, of course).
Maybe a bigger step needs a bigger change than those in charge have been making on our behalf over the past decades.
Merging the assets of two Borough grounds could create something new, something different......
Yes, tradition is very important, but we could start a new one!
Cash usually, although not always, makes a difference........ just look at Chelsea!

TBH, I think having a genuine, benevolent Max Griggs type figure like Rushden had would be the only way we'd ever get close to the FL.
Look at Crawley. Over half a million in transfers to win the Conference. And they're a BSS club at best!
Don't get me wrong, it's a nice dream. But unlikely to happen.

We're not a league side, and with the current set up we won't be. A realistic aim is BSS with maybe the occasional appearance in the BSP. Plenty of teams in the last 10 years and beyond have tried to go all guns for it, and its almost killed them off - Weymouth, Lewes, Histon, Canvey, Kingstonian, Grays, Hornchurch - even as long ago as nearly 20 years ago Maidstone tried to 'buy' league status, got them there, and imploded.
It is a nice dream but without a sustainable backing behind it (having regular crowds above 2000 for example or an Abramovich type person) it will only do more harm than good in the long run. Merging will give us neither of those.

given the friendly atmosphere of non league to the hostile one of league football,i'd rather stay non league.

If Sutton United & Carshalton Athletic merge the club would still be called Sutton United. Take the Sut from Sutton. Take the ton from Carshalton. It's two teams merging so they're united. That leaves you with Sutton United.

Sutton are the larger of the two clubs with more than double the support, thriving and active Supporter's Trust and Supporter's Club, stable and sound financil position, great history and have just won promotion. We would have nothing to gain from any merger. Carshalton would, however, have much to lose, pride, history, identity...oh, hang on

But wasn't that Jim Thompson's doing as he owned both grounds and decided to sell up forcing the clubs out of existance. Non League's version of Ron Noades (although Palace and Brentford just about survived).

I think you mean Deeply Inept Public Relations Exercise Does that mean that Lord DEEPL (as I believe his minnions are now having to call him) will ban you from all future postings on SUFC walls about CAFC and of course from setting foot within 200 miles of Colston Avenue?

And on Andy K's point, I think we should be a top BSS club, comparing ourselves with similar stature clubs. I'd then agree that being a yo-yo club of sorts between the top of the BSS and appearances in the BSP would be financially beneficial if, we made enough money from TV money, improved crowds, etc to cover the increased travel and wages, etc. At present, we are not a BSP club, because we don't have sustainable finances for a full-time club - and tbh, that's probably the only real way of performing consistently well in the BSP.
