Actor and Comedian, best known for being a team captain in Buzzcocks, The Mighty Boosh and Richmond in the IT Crowd tweeted today "few games for Sutton united youth team. Then I jacked it in and went to art school"
Do we have any records on that?

Makes sense - didn't he grow up in Croydon or somewhere like that?

Born 73, so he'd have been playing youth football in 1990 & 91, when I was our youth team secretary. Have to say the name doesn't ring a bell but then I've probably forgotten 80% of the names from back then.

Don't know if anyone else heard it but was listening to Danny Baker Five Live show podcast today, (it was the show from 10 days ago). He was interviewing Noel who said he was a useful footballer in his younger days and he re-iterated that he had turned out a few times for SUFC youths. If it helps to jog the memory, he also mentioned the name of his mate, Paul Underwood, who was a more talented player and went on to play professionally after leaving GGL...

I've just had a flick through some of my Sutton programmes from the early 90s. Youth team appearances are recorded in quite a lot of them, but I couldn't find any mention of a player called Fielding.
Perhaps it's an invented memory.

I can certainly remember being impressed by a young Paul Underwood playing for youth and reserve sides, and thought that he didn't get a fair crack of the whip at first team l.evel. As for Mr. Fielding sorry can't recall. Perhaps he could pay a visit and and tell us his story.

Wikipedia probably wouldn't have information on youth team football appearances for someone whose career is irrelevant to football though. He probably saw it as a hobby.

Don't suppose hes too disappointed that his fledgling football career didn't blossom into something more significant - he maintains his first love was comedy and he's certainly done OK since...maybe when and if Mr Vine is unavailable...?

A bit of research
"Fielding might also have pursued a sporting career, playing semi-professional football for Kingstonians and Sutton United and describing himself as a left-winger in the Pat Nevin mould. "
"Fielding was a really good footballer: he played semi-professionally for Kingstonian and Sutton Utd, and had trials for Spurs and Crystal Palace."
