Gives us something to discuss whilst we wait for the start of pre-season

Not in their present form, unless you like crap football teams promoted to leagues they lower the standard in.

what would you have then OS? 2nd team automatically through to final? the 4 v 5 and winner plays 3 to play in the final?

Love to know what you consider to be a "crap" football team, OS?

Love to know what you consider to be a "crap" football team, OS? I think I gave that away on the other thread. I genuinely believe that if the playoffs stay (I am sure they will) that the system needs to change to more favour sides who finish higher. I know many will say sour grapes etc, but I find it completely wrong Dover who finished 5th got promoted after being handed the advantage in their matches by being given away ties. I do not see how in anyway the Conference National is all the better for having them. I don't see how they can compete or how they will avoid coming straight back down again.

Play-offs ought to stay purely because it keeps more teams in the division involved in the chase for promotion for longer. As already mentioned though, the system really needs to be changed and the idea mooted is much fairer. Just to expand on it: Single leg affairs - 4th at home to 5th on the Saturday after the regular season finishes, then 3rd at home to the winners on the following Tuesday or Wednesday and then 2nd at home to those winners on the next Saturday. That way the 5th placed team would really have their work cut out to gain promotion (as it should be) and the team finishing 2nd would have proper advantages, only needing to win one game and being able to rest and re-charge for a fortnight and get the opportunity to clear up some injuries.

By what measure do you say they "were handed an advantage in their matches by being given away ties"? It's not like the league suddenly changed the rules. And Dover certainly didn't conspire to get 5th place in the league, unless you think something more sinister was in place. You are coming across like you are just bitter against Dover and you hate the play offs because of it. Saying things like "How the conference national can't be better with them" sounds really bitter. To be honest, I think it's worse with Eastleigh there as their boom or bust approach will do more long term damage to the game as a whole than Dover, which whatever ones feelings are against them beating us (and then of course going on to beat Ebbsfleet), at least they didn't spend the stupid amounts of money than that Hampshire lot.

I am certainly not bitter against Dover, I do feel an injustice rather than sour grapes as such. Clearly there is a pattern across all leagues which has seen almost all 2nd place sides fail to gain promotion, and I cannot see that is really in the interests of the game. Eastleigh are a different matter, they won the league and that means automatic promotion end of. I do not share the enthusiasm for the playoffs, I actually feel physically sick watching my side play in them. I support the team over a season starting in July ending in April and not a lottery which takes a couple of days, it devalues the game IMO.

I wonder if the poll could be improved by a third option, "Yes, but not in their current form."
I think quite a few of us might have chosen that option.

I don't think the play-offs should be scrapped no - as mentioned by others - it does keep some end of season excitement for those teams competing for the play-offs places.
Have said before to a mate that they should be reconstructed so runners up automatically go through to final and third plays fourth for the other final spot.
