....with Staines being firmly rooted at the bottom of the league with only 5 wins out of 28 games ( with no draws ),and a goal difference of minus 35. Must go there with confidence, a win would take us to 40 points.

3 of 5 Staines' league wins this season happened in August. Since then, they've beaten Stortford and Gosport at home. Their last (and only) away win was in August. Marcus Gayle has since departed of course and ex Dover boss Nicky Forster has the reigns. Compared to our nightmare season, we were on 20 points, but won less (4), but a few draws bumped our points up.
Unless Staines get an early goal, they can't afford to "Park the bus", so I hope it's a game which actually provides a decent game of footy rather than a "Concord" type a few weeks back.

Great win
It seems Scannell, White and Wellard all got injured though.
All the subs we made were because of injuries and really unluckily two of them were subs.
Scannell off for White
White off for Wellard
Wellard off for Wishart

Terrible game settled by a Wellard wonder strike. Hope Arron Howes ok he seamed down for a long time at the final whistle after a heavy challenge right on the whistle

Scannell looked like a hamstring but the other two were just precautionary as neither were fully fit it seems.

Good hard earned 3 away points .. It's was never going to be 5-0..... Staines never looked like scoring & the chances we had we couldn't put away , great strike from ricky to win the game .. ( dos probly said 'get me a goal') to him as he came on ... Not a classic .... Staines do look a ryman team .,,, here's to Tuesday ⚽️⚽️⚽️

Dos did actually say to RW just after he had come on "get a goal for us Ricky" and he promptly served up a very late winner. He turned two defenders the wrong way, traveled unhindered and then let fly. Jack Turner hardly moved and not for the first time since he has been Staines' keeper, a U's player had beaten him for range. Perhaps that is a weakness for him because he kept the home side in the game with some good saves from close in, brave 'keeping and good handling. When he was beaten his defenders were there to clear.
Not that this was the Alimo as U's looked out of sorts against the bottom side who mustered just two worth while efforts on goal that Aaron Howe dealt with. I don't think it helped that most of the bench were carrying knocks and losing Scanners in the first half to a hammy (thanks to the Staines' muppets in the stands for their reaction - I may weary a dodgy cap but I don't celebrate an injury to an oppo fan) didn't help. What I have long felt about those idiots I will refrain from describing on here.
Well done to the emergency ref today. Not easy expecting to run the line and then get drafted in to ref at the last minute.
Staines looked doomed now; shame because their pitch was excellent today and their young side kept going throughout. But I won't be weeping for their fans in the stand.

We made extremely hard work of a match that we really should have put out of sight in the 1st half. Staines to their credit worked hard throughout the match but its not difficult to see why they are adrift at the foot of the table. We had to wait until the 87th min for Wellard to show us what he can do, and it was a pearler as they used to say. Up until then we looked determined to spurn every opportunity by all means possible and seemed destined to want to pull a 0-1 defeat out of the hat.
Our play in the oppos box just isn't right, wether its movement or arriving too late we simply give the oppos far time much time to set themselves. Not just today but throughout the season our cut backs are consistently finding a clearing boot and not a U's player. It was no surprise to me that our goal came from a crack at goal from the edge of the box instead of a pass into it.
Having said that I thought Shaks was outstanding today, and I thought if anyone he could bring the ball with him and score. It was good to see a touch of the old Binnsy in that last 10mins or so getting down the flank and causing Staines problems.
Still 40pts puts us about safe with a mirrored record of W10 D10 and L10.
I am not sure charging 5yr olds a fiver to get is the way to go though!

With five minutes to go this match looked to be drifting to an undistinguished 0-0 result. Then sub Ricky Wellard scored what's becoming a trademark goal, cutting in from the wing in deceptively casual fashion then unleashing a shot that beat the keeper with sheer accuracy.
Until that point we'd had plenty of shots on target but those that weren't dealt with by Jack Turner were either blocked in the box or cleared off the line. Staines defended better than might have been expected, but in truth we lacked a bit of quality in front of goal. They offered little up front, but with Aaron Howe having a patchy afternoon in our goal there was always the chance they'd nick one. So there was a feeling of relief at the final whistle.
That completes our third double of the season (after St Albans and Farnborough) but was our only win in February. If we're going to have much chance against the division's top side on Tuesday then we'll need to perform better than we did today against the basement team.
