In which case we also need to know the number of goals we've scored where the ball has hit the woodwork on it's way into the net and not just the number that haven't resulted in goals. If your statistics are right ('please show your working!')it should be 3 or 4.

What if you score from a rebound off the post? Does that count?

I'd rather we were hitting the woodwork when we didn't score than missing the goal entirely!

Of course a shot that hits the frame of the goal and rebounds away is off-target. Sometimes that's down to bad luck rather than bad judgment. But if a disproportionate number of Sutton's shots are striking post or bar, that might suggest that our forwards are not quite getting their angles right often enough rather than that the footballing gods somehow have it in for us.

I decided to keep the stat when we hit the woodwork 3 times vs Maidstone, and to clarify we have hit part of the goal frame 10 times so far from 11 matches. I am not aware that any of the goals we have scored have hit the woodwork on the way in or that any goal has been scored on the rebound. In addition we have hit the inside of the woodwork several times without profit. We are statistically defying the odds.

The point surely is that it is very rare for a shot to hit the target to the exact square inch that the striker intended. Therefore to hit the woodwork that number of times, without the ball deflecting into the goal, does suggest we have been a touch unlucky.

It's not that clear from the SUFCTV footage but I seem to remember (given that I was standing pretty much right behind the goal) Dan Spence's goal against Concord clipped the post on the way in.

I had a close look at this, and the ball hits the bar just beyond the post, and not the post itself, its already over the line.

I should really know the answer to this but was the 2-0 win on Saturday our first win at Weston?

No, we won 3-2 there on Easter Saturday 2006, with our winning goal being scored by Luke Cornwall. I believe that was our first win under Ian Hazel and post John Rains
