A 1-0 home defeat was not the result that we were hoping for or probably expecting, but it was a reminder that there are no easy games at this level, and that (once again) if you don't turn pressure into goals then you can get punished. In a rather scrappy and tetchy match, H&Y set up with a five-man midfield and well drilled back four. We had the ball in their box far more than they had it in ours, but a defender nearly always got to it before one of our forwards could shoot. They did serve notice of attacking threat by forcing an early save from Ross Worner, and later had a goal disallowed for offside, but after that created little - except in the 68th minute when sub Josh Scott found a gap in our defence and powered through to beat Worner. Their keeper did make three good second-half saves, but we knew it wasn't to be our afternoon when, after we'd laid seige to their goal, Bedsente Gomis hit the inside of a post only for the ball to rebound into the keeper's arms. If a silver lining is emerging it's that nobody, seeing our results this season, could possibly claim that our artificial pitch is giving us an unfair advantage at home.

Credit to H&Y today. Defended well, we didn't test the 'keeper in the first half even though we were camped in their half for much of it and then they punished an error to score the only goal of the game in the first 15 mins of the second.
When we did break through, we found their 'keeper as tough an obstacle to hurdle and thus a 1-0 away win was the result. Can't fault the effort and determination of the team but possibly our application and decision making at times.
We lost another player to injury too, Fitch's hamstring I suspect.
Ref did ok today but he probably could have added another 4 mins on for the time he wasted issuing yellow cards. He was ridiculously over the top when giving them out but at least this Weston-s-M based ref got here on time. Sadly the only plus point for U's.

I'd just like to say how well the bugler played the last post. Very moving.

Someone will have to point him out to me sometime I don't go very often nowadays, though i have been to the last three home games as i'm enjoying watching football on the new pitch, which i think is brilliant. I always sit in roughly the same place in the stand. A couple of rows from the back, up behind the away team dugout. If you want to talk to me please come and say hello. If you want to hit me please don't bother ! Sallycat is 100% right This type of post gets nowhere. From a declaration point the inland revenue have an interest I believe and it would be fruitless for the Club to inflate figures (I know of at least 20 people who were not there at either Monday or today - some of whom are in hospital).

Thought we started the game really sloppily which may have been fall out from the game Monday. Tried to play at a frenetic pace but proceeded to rush things, fail to pass the ball and fail generally to control the game. I actually thought Hayes could easily have led at ht (though the disallowed goal was rightly called back for a clear foul despite their complaints). 2nd half, well it was a familiar story of a failure to take chances and a bit of shocker against after allowing a ball to be passed straight through the middle to put the guy clean through. He almost made a hash of it for us but dribbled the shot in. We rather lost our way for 10-15 mins after the goal and they could have extended the lead and killed the game. Then we got it going a bit and could easily have turned the score around, you sensed if we got 1 we'd probably go on and win. But we didn't. Need to find some goals. Thought we also could have got Tom on the ball more seeing as he was beating his guy for fun and was a huge threat whenever receiving it.

Sorry the bit about Inland Revenue is horseshit. As long as income is declared they would not give a flying f. Am sure every penny will be accounted for correctly.

He is strong direct and very hard to knock of the ball. If he was played deep he could use his pace running at defenders. Just a thought!

Firstly the remembrance piece today was very well done, and before I say anything 'lest we forget' those who made it possible for us to moan today. We huffed and we puffed, we bossed the match and ran the midfield all afternoon, so nothing new there. We suffered from, a fine goal keeping display, some bad luck and a dollop of bad decision making in the final 3rd. When it happens week in week out you have to look for reasons. I think it may partly be down to our forwards simply not being sharp enough. The number of efforts of the woodwork this season (18) are notable when you realize none have come back to a U's player and have instead landed at the feet of the opposition. We have a great side, good work ethic, but you can be crap, not touch the ball all afternoon and still win the match if you can score your one chance, and your oppos fire blanks. Unlike others I thought the officials were very poor continuing a trend of down hill officiating where they simply make up decisions. One thought that occurred to me is can Tom Bolarinwa play down the middle? Looking at him score last week at Eastbourne maybe he could?? Stewart, you are reading my mind as I write

Today's result not good... But can't fault the team's effort ... Gave 100% and on another day would of won this match (we keep saying that!!) still think we need someone to get on the end of Toms, dans & Ross sterns great runs & crosses & get the ball in the back of the net.... Stuart fleetwood can't buy a goal, Craig macallister works hard & Dan fitchett looks to of taken a knock , dundo plays a lot deeper.... Get a goal scorer ... Keep playing as we have been and I still believe we will make the play offs ... Come on you u's!!!

If I can get back to the game for a moment, I am getting a little fed up trying to convince my mates who don't come to Sutton (and myself if I am honest) that we are the best team, with most of the play, yet keep drawing or as today, losing.
We need to address our shortcomings in front of goal before the play offs start to seem too far away. I know the management will be doing so but I dread to think how many points we have lost in the past few weeks in games we should have won if possession made points.
In fact, today's game would have been cancelled if we had made the most of our possession against Aldershot.
The team is very solid and looking pretty decent at the back now too. Eastmond, Gomis and Bolarinwa in midfield are more than good enough (Tom was MOTM in my opinion) but we need the front guys to do their job.
I won't throw stats around about goals per game because it is not just one forward who is not putting the ball into the back of the net right now.
Top marks for the Remembrance activities and the speech from the new chaplain and bugle playing for The Last Post. Minutes silence was impeccably observed as always.
Just want three points!

I was sorry to miss the chaplain's speech... I was feeding my daughter at the time. Good to hear it went well.

When will we learn how to make the most of a free kick? Every corner is wasted. The team gave all today but it is the same old story. Very frustrating. We missed Kevin A today. Simon Downer was superb as a full back but we needed him in the centre. Never a good game against H&Y.
