I am trying to identify two SUFC members (players?) who are commemorated on the SUFC Roll of Honour for WW1, but I need more information before I can identify them as they are not apparent on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission database:
C. Smith
S. Trendall
Can anyone provide any biographical, wartime service or football service information?

May have found C Smith. Played one first team match in the mid 1930's. Nothing on S Trendall as yet.

The Golden Jubilee handbook has a Caleb Smith joining as goalkeeper in 1904-05 and there is a team photo from the following season featuring him. He is also in a past vs present photo from Xmas 1908. No mention that I could see of a Trendall but there is a J L Rendall in the 1905-06 photo. Have you checked medal records?

I have just checked the names on the War Memorial in Manor Park. There is a Pte C B Smith listed and also Able Seaman F A Trendell who could be a relative of S Trendall as its not a very common name.Hope this might help.

There is someone called Andy Arnold who seems to be researching the names on the Sutton and Carshalton War Memorials. He may be able to help. He's on Twitter @ww!geek_andy and at carshaltonwarmemorials.webs.com.

Steviem:
Thanks for the lead regarding C.Smith - research has now confirmed this to be the right one and I include a summary of research: Caleb Brown Smith was born at Tunbridge Wells, Kent in 1881. He married Lilian Alice Rice [at Sutton, Surrey] in 1910 and they resided at ‘Briarwood’, Ringstead Road, Sutton. Before the war, Caleb was a house painter and decorator. He enlisted at Sutton and served as 47929 Private in the 27th (Service) Northumberland Fusiliers (4th Tyneside Irish). He was killed in action south of Armentieres, France on 17th January 1917, age 35. He is buried at Ration Farm Cemetery, La Chapelle-D’Armentieres. He joined Sutton United as a goalkeeper in the 1904-05 season.
I have already contacted Andrew Arnold and have his book 'Their Name Liveth For Evermore' which includes another former SUFC (and CAFC) player, Robert Henry Collins (died of gas poisoning in 1919).
Wellie:
I shall follow your lead regarding Able Seaman F A Trendell, Royal Navy.
Howard61:
Welcome to the forum - most of us are REALLY VERY NICE - I shall look into the TRENDELL / Sutton link for further clues.
Mfrake:
Thanks for your efforts so far. Please check PM sent on 18th Nov.

There is an S Trendle listed on the CWGC website. Also have you tried nmarchive.com?

This S Trendle resided and enlisted in Tottenham and appears not to have had any south London links, although he is not discounted.
Ancestry and Findmypast have far more record sets than the Naval and Military Archive.
The key to solving this one is to find a mention in the football archives, which Frakey is looking into - a pre-WW1 programme could be a useful starter.

At the time of the 1911 Census, Sidney Trendle was 15, so I think he can be discounted.

There are records in the British Newspaper Archive of an S Trendall playing inside-right in a game against Redhill in April 1914. So the name is right. I don't have a subscription so can't get the full articles but there's enough visible to be sure.

That's interesting. I am hoping to cover the 13/14 season in the library next week, so I will be able to hopefully add to some of the above.
