Once again very entertaining stuff at GGL. To be honest thought we probably deserved to win on balance but a 5 minute switch off cost us. The penalty was a weird one, wasn't 100% sure it had gone in from my viewpoint and didn't start celebrating till a good 10 seconds after it was taken!

A game we should have comfortably won, another one. Yes Maidenhead were a threat on the break but we had enough chances to win this game and the next.

On a day when every other side in the top six lost, it was disappointing that we couldn't take more of an advantage. Our home form is still rather ropey, but at least we didn't lose - which at one stage in the second half looked the most likely outcome.
This game was reminiscent of some at GGL earlier in the season: a dominant first half with little to show for it then a dodgy period in the second half during which we undid the earlier good work. Ross Worner made one good save before half-time but otherwise it was Sutton doing almost all the attacking. Tom B created one great chance for himself with a powerful run that took him round the visiting keeper Pentney only for a defender to make a last-ditch interception that saw the ball diverted into the keeper's arms. But Tom wasn't to be denied and when Pentney couldn't hold a Dan Fitchett shot he was on hand to score from a tight angle. Dan Wishart struck a post early in the second half but Maidenhead then had their best spell of the match, scoring twice in the space of a few minutes. But for another decent save from Worner they might have made it three soon after. Sub Ross Stearn helped to turn the tide back in our favour, with one cross hitting the far post then another being handled by a visiting defender. Fellow sub Craig McAllister took the resulting penalty with Pentney getting a hand to the ball but unable to prevent it squirming over the line. We had opportunities to win the game, with Fitch heading just over late on, but in the end had to settle for the point and a hold on 4th place.
We've now played half our league fixtures (not often we can say that before Christmas!) and have 35 points. The same return from the second half of the season would probably see us finish in a play-off position.

I only decided it had gone in when Craig approached the rebounding ball and picked it up instead of booting it into the net (which he was in a perfect position to do).

Another great game on the 3G and I suppose a point will have to do given the circumstances (having to come form a goal down) but it could have been all three.
Tom B ripped their defence a "new one", as they say, in the first half but just the one goal to show for it. Maidenhead has a decent side, just look at their squad and after Dan W had hit the post early on in the second half they began to impose themselves and the equaliser was not a great surprise when it came.
Their second came about after Dundo had been clearly fouled as the initial cross came in but the recycled ball was poked home by Dave Tarpey (who else).
After a good save from Ross Worner, U's responded and Stearny was very unlucky with a curling effort (certainly not a cross AA) that came off the bar. And it was Stearn whose attempted ball into the box was handled for Craig M to score (just!) from the spot. Fitch had a great chance from a well worked corner but headed over. Honours even.
Home form (results anyway) haven't matched those away from GGL but I have yet to see a bad game at home. It is noteworthy that of the 21 matches played on 3G in the NLS not even 50% have resulted in home wins. Doesn't appear to be so much advantage as the rest of the clubs possibly thought there would be. Just plenty of good football, here anyway.
As for the ref yesterday. He had three biggish calls. The first was Dundo's tackle on the edge of our on box that led to our opener. Maidenhead moaned like hell about it but it was a great challende and there was a long way for U's to travel to score. The initial ball in for their second gaol saw Dundo given a blatant "back" and was a foul. As for our pen, I am not totally convinced that it was (didn't have a great view) but, as it was only our second award this season it was about time we got the rub of the green and for Devonshire to moan about that after is a bit rich considering the infringement in the build up to their second. So, the ref probably got one right, one wrong and the other? He made some odd decisions at times but we had no bookings yesterday (a plus for U's this season) and we have seen far worse this season.
Onto the FAT for another tough test.
